Does anyone know if there are Notary Records for Graciosa? If there
are, I don't believe that the FHC (Family History Centers) have
microfilmed them. I am trying to fill in some gaps that are in the
church records and I thought that Notary records might contain some
helpful information. Where might I be able to find these records? I
would think that I might have to write to the Angra archives. Any
information would be greatly appreciated.
Also, if anyone else is researching ancestors on Graciosa, some of the
surnames from there I have include Athaide, Neto, Souza, Silva,
Picanco, Velho, Sodre, Pacheco, Novais, Mello, Correia, Betencourt,
Coelho, and Pereira. They are mostly from Nossa Senhora da Luz and
Apostolo Sao Matheus, but there are a few from Guadalupe and Santa
Cruz.

I have not searched notary records. So I'm not sure if I'm remembering this information correctly. Others who have searched will correct or amend my statements.
The notary records were not filmed. The only way to see them is to go the regional archive yourself or hire a researcher to go search for you. They notary records are filed alphabetically under the name of the lawyer or person who drew up the papers, not your ancestor's name.
That's what I seem to remember.

Hi David-
I have Manuel Correa de Mello (b.14 February 1833 in Nossa Senhora da Luz) who married Januária Candida Júlia de Lima. She was my great grandfather's sister. I have names 3 generations back for Manuel de Mello but no dates or locations of birth, death, etc. Do you happen to have information that may relate to Manuel's ancestors?

Does anyone have any information on or is connected to a Captain
Miguel de Souza de Athaide? He was born around the 1670's-1680's. His
wife was Maria de Mello. They lived in Luz, Graciosa. I have his death
record, which was 2 Mar 1754, but no marriage or birth record. Any
information would be helpful. They had 6 children-Manuel Espinola,
Antonia, Joanna, Joao, Jozefa, and Manuel de Souza. I wonder if there
are records/documentation of when someone was appointed to a certain
military rank of some sort.
