Okay so before I had upgraded to Family Tree Maker 2011, I was able to print a tree with boxes on both male and females. Now it only does either male or female not both.  Does anyone know how to change this?

Hi Pam,

I use FTM 2011 and I can’t figure out how to change it so it WILL print just male or female. There has got to be a setting somewhere.  What version did you upgrade from?

If you belong to Ancestry.com, you can email them and they will tell you how to do this assuming the new program still allows it.

Pam and Rick,

I use FTM 2011, although I don't print trees very often.  However, I think the "box and line styles" settings under "Pedigree Chart Options" might be the place to specify borders and colors for boxes for females and males.  This would be on your screen to the right of the actual chart, and it allows you to customize the appearance of the boxes.  After you enter your preferences for females, go down and do the same for males.  You can have females with red borders and males with blue borders, etc.  This just controls the appearance; all ancestors, male and female, will appear in the tree.  I don't know how to make it print just male or female.

Hope this helps a little.

Nancy

Okay I think I figured it out which is kind of stupid way to do it.  you have to left click on the person you want a box around and then right click then click on mark selected then click on mark 1

Disregard that it highlights them and puts a box so I don't know

Okay I really see now how to do it. For whatever reason I had the border NONE a color has to be selected. so now it works. Thanks

Pam, I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to do, but you can customize the boxes for all females by clicking the word "females" (under boxes in the Box, Border and Line Options window) and then selecting a border color and then a fill and shadow color, if desired.  The default for all three of these is "None."  Then go down a line, click on "males," and make additional selections.  There are other options, as well.

Pam,

I just realized that I'm using FTM 2012, not FTM 2011.  Maybe that's why my instructions aren't working for you.  Suggestion:  Download the Companion Guide for your version, offered free as a pdf document.  You can find the link under the Help menu.

Good luck,
Nancy

OK, good, so it does work with both versions.
