I am looking for records from the 1700's and 1800's from Graciosa Island, and I am unable to locate them on this site: http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ig/ There is an icon for the island, but it does not show in the drop down. Am I missing something? Can anybody provide any insight into researching Graciosa?
you are not missing anything, the records for Graciosa are not online as yet. You will have to go to www.FamilySearch.org and do a “place” search for Portugal, Graciosa and the village you are looking for and order the microfilm. You will then have to go to your local Family History Center (FHC) and view the film. If you are anywhere near Seaside CA, I think that I have most of the Graciosa film on permanent loan. There are other FHC’s that others researching Graciosa may have permanent loan film.

Eliseu, I'm also interested in finding my family from Graciosa. My grandfather was Joao Cunha Dias, b1858,and grandmother Maria Jesus Cunha, b1864. My father was Jayme Cunha Dias, b1890 and his first wife Maria Tomas Cunha, b1890. My father's family was from Barro Branco, Graciosa. Thanks for any help you can give. Lorraine

First, I am searching for baptism information on my ggg-grandfater Cosme Joze de Azevedo. Per his obituary (from Norte Grande, Sao Jorge), he was born around 1821 in Sao Matheus on Graciosa. Per his obituary and marriage record, he is the son of Aurelia Rosa, who was unmarried. I don't have any information on her or her parents. While I am unable to corroborate it, there is a handwritten family note that states Cosme's father was named Cosmos (or Cosme) Jose Rosa. Thankfully, all of their first names are relatively uncommon :)
Any info would be appreciated.

I think you have your name information a bit “confused”… COSME should be the
last name so, Cosme José de Azevedo is most probably José de Azevedo Cosme,
and your José (da?) Rosa should be José da Rosa Cosme… let’s hope we are
right!!! J
Can you send me the marriage info or scanned document? I have access to the
marriages of S. Mateus from 1594 to 1840.

Because I haven't been able to get my hands on any Graciosa records yet, I have nothing from Graciosa - these are from Norte Grande in Sao Jorge. I don't know if there is a marriage document for his mother (Aurelia Rosa) because she is shown as solteira.
Hope this helps!
Thanks for your time :)

You are right. I had never seen it as a first name. Anyway my experience is
only about S. Miguel and Graciosa Islands. I will look in my marriages what
is there about. I will ask Márcio Borba too. He has a lot of information on
S. Jorge Island.

Cosme name is of Italian origin "Cosimo". It is a first name and I have
come across it in S. Miguel records, recently Capelas and I think Nordeste
early records also. All as first name.
