But in the mess of last Friday's ep, they finally uncover a decent reason
for the Atlantis Expedition to stay in the Pegasus galaxy, in a word:
ATONEMENT.
After awakening the Wraith, the Replicators and creating Michael, TAE might
as well be the Pegasus galaxy's Enemy #1. So for the good of humanity,
Terran, Milkywayan, and Pegasusian, TAE's new mission to set right what they
themselves indirectly made wrong.
Bonus would be if reps from various societies in the galaxy requested TAE
leave or declared them personae non grata. So now, TAE would be force to
protect and serve a galaxy that fears and hates--without benefit of a
folliclely- and ambulatory-challenged leader.
It is also the worst element of the episode because we FINALLY get a great
reason for the SERIES to continue--AFTER it's been cancelled.
Sigh.

or a plotline for a series of movies?
Unless I'm wrong, in a forthcoming episode, part of what you wrote
above comes about. I'm not being specific because I don't want to
spoil anything.

Many.
Many, many, many, many, many.

It's an explanation, not an excuse!

Getting awfully close to a direct political analogy there, Ken. I
don't think the suits will let them go there, at least not all the
way. It could be good though.

At the risk of sounding political ...
Oooops, that sounds rather political.
No, a historical analogy. With great power comes the temptation to
underestimate various challenges and overextend oneself so even if one is
victorious said victory is pyrrhic and far more costly than one expected, be
it the US, Russia, Britain, China, Japan, Rome, the Asgardians, the
Altarans, the Centauri, Cardassians, the Dominion, the Borg, et al.

Newly Formed Pegasus Government: We hereby request a timetable for the withdrawal of
the Atlantis Expedition from our galaxy!
