Why haven't they been using these writers all along? Tight thou simple
plot, funny boob stuff, more character growth for Rodney with
continuity (a combo rarely seen), a smart contribution from
"Jennifer" (who? what? when?), and they even thought to toss stuff out
the door to lighten the load (though I would have chucked the
machinery on the wall; when did dirt start weighing so much?).
After the last few dismal episodes this one was a huge surprise.

Whatever happened to leaving a guard at the gate, anyway?
What is the Doctor, the Atlantis slut? First Ronon, now McKay?
I turned in about 10 minutes into it and watched the beginning last,
which was a good thing, because I'd have been REALLY annoyed had I seen

I assume the broken leg will be used as reason for us not to see Sam for

Pretty good for a non-scifi episode. The interaction between the

They had to see if McKay was in immediate danger. Carter was the leader and
had to see for tactical / strategic reason, Keller for medical reasons.
Tho Keller was right, why the frell didn't they take a jumper? It's like the

I agree about the weight, but maybe the displacement of the machinery

Obvious question, but why doesn't Sam have one of the Gou'ld healing devices

If the struts were designed to hold x tonnes, they'd last even longer
holding up x - 1. At some point that room would have been full of
miners and ore (or whatever the crates held) too, so the struts
shouldn't have given out with the addition of a pile of dirt.

Yes I think that's it. Shame they allowed it for 10 years of SG1 though, we
can hardly be expected to forget can we?
Looked like the room used to be part of a larger building, the center of
which had fallen into the big hole. the struts holding it up weren't
designed to be it's only support.
1. Filler, but with funny lines, so I gave more than 0.

You have three fairly intelligent people in a room together, and the
best thing they can find to discuss is who they'd make out with?
Keller said that she has always been underestimated; perhaps that's
because her frame of reference seems to be party times. Sam and Rodney
barely hid their contempt for her. She also seems intent on sleeping her
way through the men of Atlantis.
The plot was fairly bland, and I can't really find fault in what Sam &
Rodney tried, although I did think they dismissed the red door a little
too quickly. It's always worth looking outside the box for solutions.

She shared an almost-kiss with one guy and then days (or weeks) later
asked another guy out for a drink and from that you deduce that she's
"intent on sleeping her way through the men of Atlantis"? Despite the
fact that, to our knowledge, she actually, you know, *slept* with anyone?

Of course, that was the clean version for TV. The real game is 'who

picking two reasonable candidates. You need to mix it up. Once in a

Real Carter would have been out of there in minutes. (With all the

Imo, if a teevee character flirts with another series regular (and she or he
is a regular also), people will expect them to be together or to continue
the flirting for more than one episode. What were all those looks between
her and Ronon about a couple of weeks ago? I guess the writers forgot all
about that and decided to soften her up with the drink date with Rodney.
This is one of the reasons I have a problem with the John/Teyla set up.
They drop all these hints over the years, but I don't see it happening at
all. And it also begs the question, is John just a tease? If Teyla took
him to heart (which she didn't since she's pregnant by someone else) and
waited on him to make the next move, she'd be an old hag by the time he got
around to it. Oh and he'd Shatner the entire galaxy first.
OT to this thread, I think the baby is John's, and it'll be a mixed
Wraith/Ancient child who can power the Ancient tech and read/manipulate the
Wraith mind. Or maybe not.

Looks. Just a guess.
This episode was insulting to the intelligence of anyone watching it. Let
me list what I can remember (almost) 48 hours later
Sam's out of shape but Rodney isn't?
Yeah, let's all crawl up to the unstable hole Rodney just fell through
Sam the idiot. "Will our radios work down here?" then tries to open a door
without noticing the control panel next to it until Rodney points it out.
They need to get out, because they've added a bunch of weight to the room
and the struts are collapsing. Gee, maybe throw all the crap you can out
the door that leads to the bottomless pit? given all the crap they ended up
using in that room, I'm sure there were 300 pounds + dirt they could have
lost. They even show Jewel scooping dirt out the door, but never actually
mention it as a strategy.
Even though the room is collapsing and they have no idea when the next
tremor is, they let Rodney fool around with the grappling hook. Then when
he proves he doesn't have a clue at what he's doing they let him make more
attempts. Umm, speed is of the essence here.
The two physics geniuses don't know the cross-support trick, but the doctor
does? Seriously?
The broken leg cliché and the dangling at the end of the rope cliché. I'm
only surprised they didn't get to the "Sam gets a major leg injury" the
first time the crates collapsed.
Sam climbs down with an extra rope so Jewel can pull her over. Then Rodney
climbs down without a rope? And Jewel doesn't toss over the one Sam used?
They get .5 for MacGyvering/Mythbustering up the steam cannon, but that's
it.
This is a new low point for Atlantis. Every writer who worked on this one
should be fired for failing the 10-year old test.

Wasn't there just a characters trapped and have to find a way out

episode. 3.5, lots of funny dialog.
Maybe him staring at her breasts a few weeks back creeped her out?

Yes, agreed about Real Carter. Then again the Pegasus galaxy in general
seems to have a deliterious affect on humans. They skill go exploring to
alien planets without a shred of disguise, yet want to keep their presence a
secret.
FTL comms would probably draw a lot of power, the kind they want to power
the city. Of course FTL comms wouldn't be needed if a) they had used a
jumper or b) had extra guards with them or at the gate.

The lack of land vehicles has been a long-running complaint of fans since
SG1 started. They could always do what they do on Earth-based eps, show them
getting into and getting out of vehicles at their destination to deal with
whatever crisis--since filming vehicles in motion would be more expensive.
I thought there was some kind of long-term damage / danger to using the
sarcophagi repeatedly, to explain why they didn't. Or it makes a person
addicted to it.

That scraping of the barrel thing - they must have found one with a double

You're assuming a lot from one throw-away line.
It was an exaggeration for emphasis. Keller has had two "almost"
encounters in a few weeks, when the other men and women on the show
(actually, on both SG1 and SGA) have, maybe, a single spark a season.
The whole scene would have been better served had they simply left out
the line "you're really bad at this", which suggests that she isn't just
asking Rodney out for a drink, but had some romantic interest in him.

Well, yeah. Rodney isn't an alpha male type; Sam is probably right at the
limit of his lifting capacity. And yet despite being in extreme pain, he
still held onto the rope long enough for her to reach safety. If that's not

Both. The Goa'uld turned evil because repeatedly using a sarcophagus turns
you into a sociopath.
But Goa'uld are evil instantly. First time Goa'uld, evil. Unless the
symbiote comes from that one queen.

Sorry but that myth has been done to death. Both Daniel and Jack were put
into them multiple times, in fact Daniel did have some effects but he's
clearly back to normal. Hey, if you were dying what would you choose? It's
not like you'de be in it every week is it?
Actually a Stargate would be very useful to have. If you need to transport
someone back to Atlantis or have Atlantis send someone to you or if you have
an emergency on board. So long as you know where you are you can use it.
There are plenty of planets where they could take a gate from.
They didn't necessarily do it, but I wouldn't rule it out.
The building was on stilts because after they mined at that point, they
started mining *under* the room. And rather than relocate all of the rooms
they had even deeper, they simply put stilts up while they mined.
Not an unbelievable thing.
Or maybe she doesn't like racing pigeons?

Couldn't agree more. The key word here is repeatedly; the occasional use
clearly does no harm, or very little. This just hasn't been thought through
very well by the SG-1 writers; they were left with the movie's legacy of a
sarc and while they had decided to leave it in the series (would have been
easy to leave it out, had they wanted to) they forgot to come up with good
enough reasons for SGC not obtaining one at some stage.

They can use them when they stop. Still better than not having a gate at
all. It may also be possible to use a gate while the ship is moving,
providing it is slow enough. But I could be wrong here.

How many times has a ship been stranded with no way of getting back to
Earth? If you have a gate onboard, you just dial home. Just this one point
would be good enough for me.

Not sure what you mean here, in the context it doesn't make sense to me.
Jumpers have them - the gates? - because they fit inside the gate?

Except that's a retcon. Originally you could blast a Wraith to pieces
and the pieces would still live. Remember the arm scene ripped off
(hah!) from THE THING (from another world)?

They were collecting Stargates at one point and had dozens of them on a
ship, so it's not a supply problem.

Segways.
Watch him in SG-1 and then watch all of Atlantis and all will become clear.
;-)

Well, obviously, he tied the rope to something to get down himself. . .

Agreed. The Writers sometimes create problems for themselves that they don't
need to. The zats for example. Why have them kill at all? Why 3 shots
disintergrate? What does that do that two shots don't?
Same with all the "healing technology" the military would have wanted that
stuff and they captured enough Gou'lds to tell them how the stuff worked.
And didn't the Asgard have similar abilities?
Er and coming through the Gate would be covert? You don't have to turn up in
a tank, even Quad bikes would be useful or even bikes. Hell they could even
take Micro lites with them for longer distances.
Why not send a few of the puddle jumpers back to Earth?
What about the point where Rodney suggests they take off their clothes to
use as ropes and Sam complains, while she immediately starts to do it?

Actually, that may cause a problem. A stargate's gate address isn't
static, if you move it from one place to another, it changes. Having
one on a moving ship means constantly having to revise the gate address
so anyone sending someone to you would have to be in communication with
you to find out what the current address is. I'd assume it would be
equally problematic to have a moving "origin" address when sending
someone out.
The only reason the halfway station works is because the gates are
stationary and stable.

A planet surface is in motion along multiple vectors simultaneously.
The stargate address system is, I believe, only accurate to the stellar
level: One (active) gate per solar system.

Never shown. The Gou'uld Ring transporters can be intercepted, because
they require both a transmitter unit and a receiver unit. The Asgard
transporters, which is what's used on the Earth ships, are more like
the Trek transporters, needing only a single transmitter/receiver unit,
the other end can be anywhere they can track.

Apparently not so easy - the network to Atlantis used up a lot of gates,
and they said they were having a very hard time finding enough. The point
remains - they aren't a trivial thing to have on hand - you've got to find
a gate somewhere uninhabitable, or steal them from enemies.

It depends where they are. Inbound wormholes would require an ever-changing
address, and we don't know if gates can work just anywhere outbound without
genius-level rewiring. All the ones that have been moved have been
extensively modified. On the other hand, there was the one Apophis had on
his flagship...

Doesn't matter, you can't use gates for short hops anyway.

OK, that's actually a really good point, and possible justification for
having a gate around if they can be made to work.

>Jumpers have them - the gates? - because they fit inside the gate?
Jumpers have a remote DHD, not an actual gate. That was a badly written
sentence, sorry about that. What I mean to say is that it's fine for a
jumper to interface with a stargate, because it can go through. The big
capital ships can't do that, except in teeny tiny pieces. *
It's not a retcon, it's a contradiction. And we only saw that little event
once - wraiths were killed right from the first time we saw them.

There's also the matter of the Tok'ra hating your guts for using them.

Funny, I mentioned that in another post. Has she ever been shown to have
gotten better at using it? She's helped like one person ever, and couldn't
finish the job. And nobody else has been able to make them work at all as
far as we've seen.
>They were collecting Stargates at one point and had dozens of them on a

I'm pretty sure they DID say it was a supply problem.

So you look like a dork instead? They're not all that practical out in the
wild, and have pretty crappy range. Years ago I saw a video of a prototype
made for cross country use, but I don't know if they ever produced it. *
Fair question, and they may well have since SG-1 ended (we do know of at
least one in control of stargate command). *
Sorry but you miss the point. Yes the ship has to be stopped for the gate
system to work. However, revising the ships gate address would be easy as it
would be taken from the ships navigational computer, this sort of thing is
already done with military aircraft and aircraft carriers to update their
nav systems.
Once you dialed Earth you transmit your co-ordinates Earth can the dial you
back (a bit like reversing the charges on a telephone call)
How often have we had episodes where a ship has had to find the nearest
planet with a gate (DUH!) to contact Earth or Atlantis?
Think of the episode at the start of Season 3 where they were stranded after
battling the Wraith, had the Earth ship had a Gate they could have simply
dialed up Atlantis for help.
All you need is to be able to find your position in space (not that hard)
and have an energy source and you can evacuate all your crew OR bring spare
parts to the ship.
Don't know about the one per system, but in the first show, they showed that
the reason they hadn't been able to get anywhere was because they weren't
allowing for planetary drift. Carter found the key in the temple on Little
Egypt, where the movie was (Name just flew out of my head) and that's how
the Stargate Program really got started.
Abados, wasn't it?
Where in the Pegasus Galaxy or ours? I always thought there were planty of
planets with Stargates that were on planets that were no longer habitable
(for example the one that the Russian soldier got sent to when he had
Annubis inside him and the one from Wormhole extreme being two examples of
uninhabited planets) and if you also remember Jack put in a load more Gate
addresses than the Gou'ld knew about (5th Race)
In the Pegasus Galaxy, there appear to be plenty of gates that are in use
where no one lives (including planets where the human populations have been
wiped out by the Replicators) so getting hold of at least a handful of Gates
should be easy enough.
