I like the characters. I like the actors. I like the sets.
Um, can anyone tell me what is the point? What is the mission? What's the
purpose of the Atlantis Expedition? Sure, they originally were trying to
find Ancient technology, but currently they seem to be just targets, first
of the Wraith then the Replicators. They've been in hiding, but it seems
pert near half the (Pegasus) galaxy know they weren't destroyed. Of course
considering when they do go on scouting missions they don't even bother to
wear disguises but where their Atlantis outfits complete with logo. What's
the overarching arc?
The solution is MORE Stargate spin-offs:
--STARGATE COMMAND: The SGC program finally goes public as it's revealed
there are aliens among us and aliens out there, along with places to
colonize. They need policing and assimilating as well as proper medical
care.
--STARGATE RENEGADES: RepliCarter, Fifth, Michael, RepliWeir, Ford, , Niam,
Ba'al, Adria. There are a number of recurring characters who straddle the
line between good and bad who can easily go either way, who have trouble
fitting in with society. You could have a series following a group of them.
--STARGATE FRONTIER: Where SGC would be about aliens assimilating among
human society. SGB could be about humans colonizing an alien world, and
assimilating with the local aliens there.
--STARGATE ORACLE: "You are the Fifth Race. Your role is clear. If there is
any hope in preserving the future, it lies with you and your people."
Minutes before dying, the last of the Asgard race, Thor said those words to
SG1--and to humanity. But how did Thor know? What or whom convinced him that
humans, the Tau'ri were indeed the Fifth Race when other Asgardians had
doubts? Was the Ori the only threat humanity faced--or was there something,
or someone, worse? And what price will be paid to find out not to mention to
construct some kind of defense? All those questions and more will be
answered, when the search begins for said "Oracle".

Clearly a quest driven drama. Natch major clues would be found in season
finales, but also clues as to whatever threat that threatens "the future".
--I would have the Doom that threatens the future revealed at the end of S1,
meanwhile discovering what happened to the advanced races in the galaxy (why
most planets seem to be medieval level tech or lower).
--Season 2 would have the SGO team seeing the destruction caused by said
Doom during their travels, finally getting the final key to finding the
Oracle in the S2 finale.
--Season 3 would feature a mad dash between the SGO and the Doom's powerful
minions, for the Oracle by the end of the finale, who would reveal what's
needed to "save the future".
--Season 4 would have a race for salvation, ending with their first solid
face-to-face win against Minions, but by the skin of their teeth. Only to
find out while they were searching for the Oracle and the Salvation, the
Doom has been working on something devastating as well.
--Season 5: The season of war. The SGO stops running and takes the fight to
the Doom.
--Season 6: We find out the Real Truth about the Doom and how "the future"
is still in danger, and has been all along.
--Season 7: We find out the Real Truth about the Furlings, what happened to
them, and who or what the Oracle really are.

Maybe there isn't one. It's purely episodic entertainment - watch it
show by show. :-)
Didn't SG1 start out all "protect the Earth" and turn into "purge the
galaxy of all threats to humans everywhere" too? I don't have a
problem with that.
SGA needs better writers, but lacking a 5+ season long story arc isn't
something that needs to be fixed.

I'm about three episodes behind this season and I only saw about half
of last season's episodes so maybe I'm not the right person to comment
but it seems that there is no real mission except to keep the Ancient
technology from falling into Wraith or Replicator hands. I suppose it
would be simpler to have the entire expedition return to Earth via
either Daedalus or the Stargate and simply fly Atlantis into a star
and let it be destroyed. But that would be like Indiana Jones
destroying the Ark of the Covenant to keep it out of the hands of the
Nazis. So they stay and fight. In a perverse way it seems to mirror
the United States' inability to withdraw from countries like Japan and
Germany long after the military mission has ended -- so in that sense
it actually feels realistic.

The Replicators have all the Ancient tech they need. They inhabited
Atlantis for weeks (?) and have built duplicates of it and make their
own ZPMs and ships. About all they can't do is ascend.
All SGA has managed to do re the Wraiths is make them more of a threat.

The Oma Desala should ascend one !
Well yes, you're quite right.. Roswell was sort of like that,
except that it had to do with just the government wanting them. I
think we need to expand it a little... You know, rehash it to the

Ascension is a biological, evolutionary process. They might be incapable, no

I could argue that humans in that universe would need millions of
years to catch up with the replicators.Perhaps the vaunted biology
would never catch up.On a side note, the level of complexity of a
human form replicator likely would dwarf the complexity of a
ZPM .Maybe they should grow replicators to make ZPM's :-)
What is the necessary ingredient to ascend in that story?A desire and
the feeling of worthiness, if I recall correctly.Jewell Staite's
character seemed interested enough, and even took steps to defend
humans, on her own volition.Would it hinge on emotions or "feelings'
if she merely decided that was what she wanted?.I dont really know if
they are going to go down that road, but it was this episode that
stirred the interest.

WEIR: We could be on our way to discovering an entirely new Ancient

Weir talking about Daniel: he speaks/reads/writes Ancient. We need him
as a first contact person.

Weir talking about Sheppard: he has the strongest ATA gene. We need

See?
On the other hand, I'm not sure Daniel's been tested (even in
Antarctica), but I could be misremembering.
I suspect that even (having descended) should he have the ATA gene, it's
probably been suppressed by
'the others'. Both times. So anything short of a full DNA work up
looking for it, he would appear to not
have the gene.
He could have gone through the ATA therapy, but, considering everything
he's been through I'm not sure
it would have stuck (for the reasons mentioned above).
