of 257 T cell epitopes. More than 90% of the epitopes were novel, and

cases of allergens in which the identified T cell epitopes accounted
for a minor fraction of the extract response, fewer known protein
sequences were available, suggesting that for low epitope coverage
allergen sources, additional allergen proteins remain to be
identified. IL-5 and IFN-γ responses were measured as prototype Th2
and Th1 responses, respectively. Whereas in some cases (e.g., orchard
grass, Alternaria, cypress, and Russian thistle) IL-5 production
greatly exceeded IFN-γ, in others (e.g., Aspergillus, Penicillum, and
alder) the production of IFN-γ exceeded IL-5. Thus, different allergen
sources are associated with variable polarization of the responding T
cells. The present study represents the most comprehensive survey to

Abstract
Inflammatory Bowel Disease, inclusive of Crohn's Disease and
Ulcerative Colitis, are immunologically mediated disorders involving
the microbiota in the gastrointestinal tract. Lavender oil is a
traditional medicine used to relieve many gastrointestinal disorders.
The goal of this study was to examine the therapeutic effects of the
essential oil obtained from a novel lavender cultivar, Lavandula x
intermedia cv Okanagan Lavender (OLEO) in a mouse model of acute
colitis caused by Citrobacter rodentium. Colitic mice orally gavaged
with OLEO resulted in less severe disease including decreased
morbidity and mortality, reduced intestinal tissue damage, and
decreased infiltration of neutrophils and macrophages with reduced
levels of TNF-α, IFN-γ, γ-22, MIP-2α and iNOS expression. This was
associated with increased levels of regulatory T cell populations
compared to untreated colitic mice. Recently, we demonstrated that the
composition of the enteric microbiota affects susceptibility to C.
rodentium-induced colitis. Here, we found that oral administration of
OLEO induced a microflora enriched with members of the phyla
Firmicutes including Segmented Filamentous Bacteria known to protect
against the damaging effects of C. rodentium. Additionally, during
infection, OLEO treatment promoted the maintenance of microflora loads
with specific increases of bacteria from the phyla Firmicutes and
decreases in γ-Proteobacteria. We observed that the Firmicutes was
intimately associated with the apical region of the intestinal
epithelial cells during infection suggesting their protective effect
was through contact of the gut wall. Finally, we show that OLEO
inhibited C. rodentium growth and adherence to Caco-2 cells primarily
through the activities of 1,8-cineole and borneol. These results
indicate that while OLEO promoted Firmicute populations it also
controlled pathogen load through anti-microbial activity. Overall, our
results reveal that OLEO can protect against colitis through the
microbial and immunity nexus and reports that a pharmacological agent,
in this case OLEO, alters the normal enteric microflora.

below him as months passed, and agents watched hundreds of guns enter
the suspected cartel pipeline.

lawsuit

The Justice Department's No. 2 on Monday acknowledged that when it
comes to the showdown over Operation Fast and Furious, the ball is now
in Republicans' court.

"It's up to the House to initiate it, we'll see what they do," said
Deputy Attorney General James Cole, one day after House Speaker John
Boehner vowed that House Republicans would be filing a civil suit in
federal court in an effort to force the Justice Department to turn
over documents related to Fast and Furious.

"It needs to happen," Boehner said Sunday. "The American people
deserve the truth."

On Monday, Cole would not say if the Justice Department is already
preparing for battle in federal court, insisting only that "once
litigation is initiated, we'll respond." It was his first comment on
the case since he wrote a letter to Boehner last week making clear the
department would shield Holder from criminal prosecution.

Last week, House Republicans -- and even many Democrats -- voted to
hold Attorney General Eric Holder in both criminal and civil contempt
of Congress for failing to give congressional investigators documents
in response to a subpoena last year. Meetings in the run-up to the
vote failed to reach a compromise, after President Obama asserted
executive privilege over the documents.

"I think the first thing you need to realize is the documents that are
at issue are not the documents concerning the actual Fast and Furious
investigation," Cole said Monday. "All of those -- other than
sensitive law enforcement documents -- were turned over. These are
just documents that occurred well after the fact."

Specifically, the documents at issue are mostly composed of internal
Justice Department emails after Feb. 4, 2011, when department
officials realized they would have to retract a letter to Congress
that denied Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents ever let
guns fall into the hands of suspected criminals.

"They concern internal communications in the Justice Department about
how we would be responding to the congressional questions, and that's
all," Cole said of the documents. "These are things we offered,
frankly, in an accommodation to try and give to Congress in return for
just having it satisfy the subpoena."

In one email from early 2011, described to Fox News, Holder told
subordinates: "We need answers on this. Not defensive BS. Real
answers." The email was among several shown in two separate meetings
with House Republicans and Democrats last week.

For more than a year, Republicans have been leading an investigation
into Fast and Furious, which was launched in Arizona in late 2009 by
ATF, with help from the U.S. attorney's office there. The operation's
targets bought nearly 2,000 weapons over several months. But for
reasons that are still in dispute, most of the weapons sold were never
followed, and high-powered weapons tied to the investigation ended up
at crime scenes in Mexico and the United States, including the
December 2010 murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.

The chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee,
Rep. Darrell, R-Calif., has said it is "critically important" to
obtain the post-Feb. 4, 2011, documents at issue because, among other
things, they could show whether top officials were "surprised or were
already aware" about so-called "gunwalking" in Fast and Furious when
confronted with new information. In essence, Republicans say the
documents could show whether the false letter was part of a "cover-
up."

In a hearing before Thursday's contempt votes, Issa insisted Holder
offered "to provide subpoenaed documents only if the committee agrees
in advance to close the investigation," adding, "No investigator would
ever agree to that."

But Justice Department officials have disputed that account, as Cole
did again Monday, saying, "We never asked them to stop their
investigation."

A Justice Department official insisted last week the documents at
issue "show no intention or attempt to conceal information or mislead
(Congress)."

Nevertheless, Boehner said Sunday that a civil lawsuit to obtain the
documents "would be coming in the next several weeks."

Days earlier, Cole informed Boehner in a letter that the Justice
Department had "determined that the Attorney General's respond to the
subpoena ... does not constitute a crime, and therefore the Department
will not bring the congressional contempt citation before a grand jury
or take any other action to prosecute the Attorney General."

That left a civil lawsuit in federal court as the Republicans' best
option, and it's unclear how a federal judge would rule.

"The American people have a right to know what happened here," Boehner
said Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation." "Brian Terry's family has a
right to know what happened here. And the fact is, is that the only
facts that we've received about this entire Fast and Furious operation
came from whistleblowers and others associated with it."

In fact, the Justice Department has turned over more than 7,600
documents, a small fraction of the 80,000 documents identified as
responsive to the House subpoena.

According to the publicly available documents, at least twice in 2010
a top federal prosecutor in Phoenix told U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke in
memos that ATF agents "have pursued interdiction of the firearms
transferred to the conspirators where possible," and that agents "have
not purposely let guns 'walk.'"

After allegations saying otherwise surfaced in late January 2011,
Burke told department officials in Washington that whistleblower
claims of "gunwalking" were "categorically false."

Days later, on Feb. 4, 2011, the Justice Department sent its letter to
Congress, saying, "ATF makes every effort to interdict weapons that
have been purchased illegally and prevent their transportation to
Mexico."

But within a month, Holder directed the Justice Department's inspector
general to launch its own investigation. And months after that, the
department retracted the letter.

in vitamins and dietary supplements for all types of benefits.
Shouldn't there be something natural that can help? Perhaps there is.

Scientists in the U.S. and Australia are studying an antioxidant for
treatment of impulsive/compulsive and addictive symptoms. It's called
N-acetyl-cysteine and is abbreviated as NAC.

What is N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC)?

NAC comes from an amino acid; it is a building block of glutathione,
considered to be the most important antioxidant in the body.
Glutathione plays a key role in fighting oxidative stress and in
detoxification, the process by which the body removes toxins.

Taking NAC has been shown to increase the levels of glutathione in
cells. In addition NAC has its own ability to reduce oxidative stress,
according to research from the University of Arizona Health Science
Center.

The Neuroscience of NAC

A review published last year in the journal Innovations in Clinical
Neuroscience described the rationale for the use of NAC to treat
behavioral problems and psychiatric disorders -- including depression,
which has been associated with oxidative stress, and compulsions or
addictions, which involve malfunction of the brain's reward systems.

NAC for Compulsive/Impulsive and Addiction Symptoms

Repetitive acts that seek some type of reward are governed by the
actions of another amino acid called glutamate. Malfunction of the
brain's glutamatergic system has been linked to addiction. Treatment
with NAC is being investigated to determine if it can restore normal
glutamate function in the brain.

After NAC is absorbed in the intestines, it passes through the blood
to the brain where it is converted to cysteine, an amino acid that
contributes to glutathione production. As complex as this chain of
events may sound, a series of NAC clinical trials is underway.

Results of Clinical Trials on NAC

Tobacco Smoking

A small placebo-controlled study led by researchers from the Medical
University of South Carolina looked at the effect of 2400 mg per day
of NAC on nicotine-dependent smokers. They found that those taking NAC
reported that they smoked fewer cigarettes. The results were published
in the journal Biological Psychiatry.

Marijuana Dependence

In another study, also led by researchers from the Medical University
of South Carolina, 24 marijuana-dependent users who wanted to cut back
took 2400 mg per day of NAC. The drug users reduced their frequency
and quantity of marijuana use. Interestingly, they also reported a
decline in compulsive feelings regarding their marijuana use.

Publishing their findings in The American Journal on Addictions the
authors conclude: "Results from this preliminary open-label study
indicate that treatment with NAC was well tolerated and associated
with significant decreases in self-report measures of marijuana use
and craving. These reductions parallel those noted in prior NAC
treatment studies in cocaine and nicotine dependent individuals."

Cocaine Dependence

A study of 23 cocaine-dependent users taking NAC for four weeks found
that 70 percent discontinued or significantly reduced their cocaine
use.

In a double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial, 13 cocaine
addicts who took 800 mg of NAC per day during three days of cocaine
withdrawal reported a reduction in cocaine cravings and withdrawal
symptoms when compared to the placebo group.

Presenting their findings in The American Journal on Addictions in
2006, the authors explain: "At the present time, there is no effective
FDA-approved treatment for cocaine dependence, despite over two
decades of intense research. A pharmacological treatment that could
serve as an effective adjunct to psychosocial treatment for cocaine
dependence would constitute a major public health advancement."

Pathological Gambling

Researchers from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine
enrolled 27 participants with pathological addiction to gambling in a
study to examine the effectiveness of NAC. Significant reductions of
gambling behaviors were observed in 16 participants, according to the
study, which appears in the journal Biological Psychiatry.

Hair-Pulling

Researchers from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine
conducted a 12-week, double-blind controlled trial among 50
individuals with compulsive hair-pulling, a condition known as
trichotillomania.

The results appear in the Archives of General Psychiatry, a
publication of the American Medical Association. "Fifty-six percent of
patients 'much or very much improved' with N-acetylcysteine use
compared with 16 percent taking placebo," the authors wrote.
"Significant improvement was initially noted after nine weeks of
treatment."

So what can these studies on NAC teach us? Science is discovering,
perhaps anew, the ways in which nutrition's role is not confined to
the physical body, but extends above the neck and into our brain and
mind. A body of research now shows the promise of the use of the
supplement NAC for smoking, marijuana dependence, cocaine dependence,
pathological gambling and hair pulling.

Let's hope that further studies support these and reveal more about
how nutrition can help improve brain function, control addictive and
compulsive behaviors and improve our wellbeing and mental health.
