Hello Everyone!

It has been quite awhile since i have posted. Life has been hectic.
Thankfully I have been doing much better - no fevers, rashes and hives
pretty much gone, stomach problems gone - all that I have these days is
joint pain (mainly in hips, back, knees), fibro pain and fatigue (though
that is so much better as well). Plaquenil made a big difference, but I also
saw a big difference when I switched off of the birth control Yasmine to
Ortho-Tricyclin Lo. Then I improved even more when I went off birth control
all together. Has anyone else experienced symptoms coinciding with taking
birth control and improved when off? Also, does anyone know of a hormone
linkage to autoimmune diseases? My husband is convinced my issues are tied
to a hormonal imbalance (and partially blames the birth control) as my
symptoms are predictable in severity depending on where I am in my cycle and
what birth control I am taking. Thoughts??? Anyone heard of this?

Steph

I went on depo provera after having my son and got very sick. Got pregnant
while on it, had my daughter and the disease has progressed since then.

My big flares are connected to my menstrual cycle. My pain doctor was not
surprised and most drs believe the connection. I am horribly ill the week
before I start.... then the week of.... it's horrible.

I do not use any hormonal birth control... I have a copper IUD.

to answer your question, yes, I believe our hormones are connected. Lupus
is mostly a woman's disease so those pesky hormones must play in somehow

actually - i just went to Seasonale (3 months between periods) and that has
been very helpful for me. Otherwise my cycles are like mini-flares with
migraines and joint pain and fever. of course, I haven't had that first
cycle yet... it could be pure hell. :P

When I was 15 I was put on birth control pills to try to regulate my
periods. It was a disaster as the pain was worse and after 3 months I
hemorrhaged was sick for 4 months lost 15 pounds ( only weighed 115 to
begin with) Lupus was not something I knew about then but my drs all
agree it was probably a factor, I did try a milder pill years later but
same result. So I have always said no since to that idea, and since my
husband and I wanted to get pregnant we never worried about birth
control. But I would say it did worsen or bring on a flare.

YES. I went on birth control pills when I was 19 (that was over 25 years
ago), and I have never been the same since. I just came down with horrible
fatigue, joint pain and headaches. I did not associate it at the time as
coinciding with being on the pills. And lupus was never suggested to me by
a doctor. It was only when my brother got very ill and almost died... then
they finally dx'd him with lupus, and he told me to go to a rheumatologist
and get tested for lupus. She took me off birth control pills
immediately.... I was 30 at that point. I can't say I noticed a big
difference coming off the pills (I had other problems by that point), but I
can definitely say that when I started them, it sure triggered illness in my
body.

That's my .02

Thanks for all your input everyone! I wish birth control pills had more of a
warning on them. Not that I am sure I would have heeded that warning since
when you are young you think you're invincible. I never pictured myself
chronically ill. I know many people take them and are fine, but my
goodness. Have docs ever used hormones to treat Lupus? I gotta wonder since
hormones seem to play such a role....

Just thinking out loud. Thanks again for your responses!

Yes, Steph, I have. I switched to Ortho Lo. I have had a tubal, but
polycystic ovaries give me hell. I lost weight when I stopped, but wound up
in ER many times for shots. Those things are hell. I can not wait to get
them out of me.
Good luck,
V
