This is very very helpful. Thank you for posting it, Susan. I didn't
understand it before, and I still don't understand *all* of it, but I
sure understand more.

I didn't snip any of it in case someone missed the original post.

Interesting! One thing Angela is very rarely allowed to have is high
fructose corn syrup. She learned to read labels for that even before she
had to start reading them because of her food allergies. Nothing with that
crap in there is allowed in our house. The only exceptions I make are
things like birthday parties where the only drink available is one that
contains it.

From the time she started drinking juice, she was allowed only one serving
per day and it has to be 100% juice, preferably organic. These days she
doesn't want much juice at all and mostly will only drink if she's sick and
doesn't feel like eating any solid food.

Oddly, she loves Gatorade. For some reason her Dr. seems to think it's a
really good thing for her to have when she is sick and always tells her to
drink lots of it. She always looks longingly at it in the grocery store
when we pass by it. I will buy it for her when she is sick, but the minute
she starts feeling better she doesn't get any more. I never keep it in the
house. Only buy a few small bottles when she is sick.

Interesting article - thanks, Susan! The bit about fructose acting
like a fat in all those nasty low-fat products makes a huge amount of
sense.

So - exercise a lot, and if you must eat fructose, eat it with the
fiber it started off with, in moderation. Sounds good advice to me!

Actually insulin's primary job is to lower blood glucose.

This primary job being defined by the independent variable that is
being sensed by the beta cells in determining how much insulin is
release.

That independent variable is blood glucose.

Incorrect. The insulin via its receptors and second messengers
activates glucose transport into the cells of target organs.

It seems that Dr. Lustig has either forgotten or never learned
physiology and biochemistry.

VAT, cure the IR/MetS, and possibly cure the type-2 diabetes:

I can believe it, I lost nearly 40 lbs by just quit drinking regular sodas.

I was already exercising, dieting and nothing seemed to work.until I quit
drinking the sodas. I had gotten to weigh over 300 at the time and believe
it or not did not have diabetic symptoms at that time.

This is the second time I had heard something about fructose. The first time
it was about it having to be turned into fat before your body could use it.

I think one of the reasons the Atkins Diet is so succesful is because it
also eliminate fructose from the diet, whether planned or not.

Your quibbles would I think be relevant criticisms of a scientific
paper, but look like quarrels with choice of words, questions of
emphasis, and simplifications of a kind I consider acceptable in an
interview. I don't see that they're sufficiently wrong to condemn the
general message.

Multiple fundamental errors in explaining biochemistry and physiology
sadly discredit the speaker in any setting.

I did identify a few transcription errors. The first was not to serious.

The first, pioglitazone is the TZD - brand name Actos - can be
recognized in context.

The slant on food industry is interesting. The consumer goes into the
grocery store full of trust. Dr. Lustig is reserved in his comments
about conspiracy. On the other hand, some of the organizations
representing the food manufacturers can become down right vicious.
They systematically attack the research funding that could uncover some
of the problems with their products.

The product known as Crisco is no longer produced, but it was made by
hydrogenation of cotton seed oil. Most of us know of transfats
otherwise known as partially hydrogenated (name the fat) that are still
ingredients in numerous food products as well as used in deep frying in
the fast food industry.

Dr. Mary Enig had a problem with the industry representing fats and oils
when she was doing research at the University of Maryland. The
organization sought to end her research funding. The following link is
