AM 990 has had good coverage all evening long. They reported earlier
that the broadcast towers on Gibraltar Rd. were on fire (and have
subsequently been destroyed), which is where KJEE, KLIT and a number
of other stations had their transmitters.

correct according to the command center. The current evac area is for
the area EAST of Mission Canyon Rd and above 192/ Foothill. Yeah,
those two places you mentioned are close, but not officially in the

The "Tea Gardens" is a private garden on an old estate at Mountain Dr.
and Cold Springs. The upper portion of the old gardens is an arch
structure seen high above Mountain Dr. When I was in high school
skaters would sneak into the then-abandoned grounds and skate on the
empty, concrete ponds. That area of the gardens was known as the "Tea
Bowls" then.

Tea Fire Moving West to Santa Barbara
Wind Has Died, But Fire in City
Thursday, November 13, 2008
The number of structures consumed by the blaze has not yet been
confirmed, but it is reported to be over 100.
http://www.independent.com/news/2008/nov/13/tea-fire-moving-west-santa-barbara/
Meagher spoke to one of the firefighters from the Montecito Fire
Protection District who was on duty when the fire began. He was dirty,
and eating a banana. Although the conversation was brief, Meagher was
able to ascertain that the fire was first spotted by the fire crew at
Montecito Fire Protection District Station 2, located at the
intersection of Sycamore Canyon and Cold Springs Road. According to
the firefighter interviewed by Meagher, at about 5:30 p.m.,
firefighters could see a one to two acre fire from their station. By
the time they arrived at the location, in an area near the northern
boundary of Westmont College known as the Tea Garden, the fire had
spread significantly. Having grown too large to cut out, the fire crew
changed their tactics to structure containment.
Meagher said that the wind has calmed noticably, but that seven Los
Angeles County Fire engines just arrived onscene.

One other thing about the Painted Cave fire -- there was NO time to
evacuate. There was no sheriff coming to doors and telling people to
pack up, no reverse-911 calls, no chance to get precious belonging
out. It was fast and over quickly. It jumped the freeway (101) and
burned a large portion of Santa Barbara -- from the mountains of
Painted Cave all the way through Modoc. People had no way to contact
one another as there were no cell phones at the time and of course, no
internet. Totally different scenario.
SBSUNNY 2008-11-14 10:23 PM
As sad as it is to lose homes, this fire was not nearly as devastating
as the Painted Cave fire -- one I lived through as my family's house
was lost.
That fire destroyed over 500 structures and took one woman's life. The
weather was over 100 degrees that day (June 1990) and we had a
terrible drought, due to the El Nino condition that had lasted for
years. In addition, we also had massive sundowner winds.
Plus, there were no major firefighter resources in Santa Barbara at
the time because they were deployed fighting other fires in Ventura
and southern California.
This fire does not compare. But I do feel sooo sorry and sad for
people who lost their homes. All I can say, from experience, is to
look forward, rebuild and go on.
You will see your neighborhoods change, most likely, because most
people tend to build bigger homes.

Thanks everyone, for the Kit Tremaine feedback on her house. It was
built with so much love, for her and the indigenous and homeless
people It would have been nice for her house to survive the things
that were sure to happen. She knew it. It's just so sad. I loved her
so much. She was a New Orleans Queen, born into wealth, who changed
her whole life and started the Sunflower Foundation (funding
underdogs) like the homeless.
I met her through a co-counseling group. We both were into supporting
Native Americans Indiginous Rights.
Ahhh. A human treasure lost, Her house now ending up in the way the
people (Hopi/Naajo) predicted would happen. Except she was one of the
few that spoke for them. May she rest in peace. Along with Hopi Elder
Thomas Banyacya.
Re: Kit Tremaine's house. I did some Googling. Christopher Lloyd put
it on the market last year. It's listed for sale with Lara Logue,
phone no. 805-450-5747. Her Web site is www.LaraLogue.com. Good luck.
I seem to remember that actor Christopher Lloyd bought that house. It
has been reported that Lloyd's house has burned down

GD and Dan39, I am wondering about 1050 also. I am Kit's only brown
haired and eyed grandchild. I am in nyc and don't have any info. Her
house was sold to a celebrity and some articles have mentioned that it
was damaged or burned in the fire. It was a great house. I have
pictures of when it was being built.

Thousands of feet above the flames, television helicopters captured a
scene that looked like a massive campfire with dozens of glowing
embers. When cameras zoomed in, however, what appeared to be flaring
coals were actually houses gutted by flame. Many of the homes were
sprawling estates.
[][]
If this fire behaves simularly to the Coyote and Sycamore Canyon
fires, expect it to lay low this morning, burn up into the mountains,
then come back with a vengeance later in the afternoon and evening.
Wind conditions are everything, as far as what the fire will do.
A true force of nature, and a fact of life, living in Southern
California. We can only hope and pray there will not be any
fatalities.

11:00 am 11/14/08: Watching the raw video from the helicopter (KCAL)
the Sycamore Canyon, Coyote Road, Conejo Road area is devastated,
house after house gone. Lot of low-end homes in this area, not
mansions, include several friends of ours who have now lost their
homes.
It appears that the DC-10 is focused on the North side of the fire
area, laying down retardant above the fire. The fear is that if the
fire climbs north into the ridges and canyons, it could circle around
behind the rest of the city, including Mission Canyon and behind the
rest of Montecito, which, with enough wind, could drive it into the
main part of the city. It's our worst case nightmare. The helicopters
seems to be focusing on hot spots that are burning to the south and
east of the fire area, cutting off advance opportunities there.
Again, the aim is to build a perimeter around the fire so if the winds
come up they've got a fighting chance tonight to hold the line. The
problem is that the line is in all directions and that's a lot of
firefighting to do. There's basically no place you can let it go
without serious damage; you have to defend the entire perimeter.

Authorities: One of California wildfires 'human caused'
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/11/16/california.fires/index.html
MONTECITO, California (CNN) -- One of three major wildfires burning
in southern California appears to be "human caused," a spokesman for
the state's fire agency said Sunday.
Victoria Nguyen, 17, and her brother Vincent, 20, evacuate from Brea,
California, on Sunday.
Investigators have eliminated "all accidental causes" of the fire that
has destroyed 210 homes and injured two people in Santa Barbara County
since Thursday, spokesman Doug Lannon said.
"We need the public's help in identifying any activity in or around
the afternoon of November 13," Lannon said.
The fire has burned 1,940 acres, including a monastery and several
mansions in the Montecito community, where celebrities, including
Oprah Winfrey, have homes. It was 80 percent contained Sunday, the
state fire agency said.
Authorities believe the fire started in the Tea Garden Estate, a
privately owned multi-acre property, about one mile north of Santa
Barbara's exclusive Westmont College.

>

Back to the Future star loses home

BACK TO THE FUTURE star CHRISTOPHER LLOYD is fighting to save his home
in the Montecito wildfire raging through California.

Christopher Lloyd, who played Doc Brown in Back to the Future and its
sequels, has his Montecito pad on the market for about $11 million,
according to the Times. It’s the former home of the late
philanthropist Kit Tremaine. Lisa Loiacono of Sotheby’s has the
listing. Lloyd has purchased a smaller home in Montecito, the Times
said.

Cleese’s Horse Ranch: Funnyman John Cleese’s Montecito horse ranch (on
sale for $28 million) has a history of owners that might surprise you.
Rich equestrian Cynthia Wood built it in the 1960s, shocking people
who saw that her horses were living far more luxurious lives than most
people. Then, colorful developer Ron Uhles bought the 16-acre spread
on East Valley Road so his daughter could ride. The ranch’s next owner
was Diandra Douglas, ex-wife of actor Michael Douglas. British-born
Cleese, of Monty Python fame, and his wife, Alice Faye Cleese, bought
it in 1999. It’s listed with Bob Lamborn and Lisa Loiacono of
Sotheby’s International Realty in Santa Barbara. They’re also the
listing agents for actor Christopher Lloyd’s (Back to the Future)
Montecito home, which was once owned by New Orleans-born heiress-
philanthropist-social activist “Kit” Tremaine. Tremaine, who built the
Coyote Road home in 1972, died in 1997 after donating well over $30
million to charitable causes, according to Lamborn and Loiacono. It’s
listed at $10,275,000.
Huffington (Michael) Due: The man who came close to being elected U.S
Senator from Santa Barbara, former Congressman Michael Huffington,
will MC a gathering tonight of the Republican Leadership Council at

Nature is a constant source of inspiration. One of our favorite
gardens is Lotusland in Montecito, California, which includes a
variety of exceptional plants. Opera singer, Madame GannaMadame Walska
Walska, who owned the property from 1941 until her death in 1984,
created the 37-acre botanic garden. Madame Walska had a colorful
history that included marrying six times. She bought the estate while
married to her last husband. After divorcing him, she christened her
estate, Lotusland, named after the lotus growing in one of the ponds
on the property. She spent the next 40 years transforming her grounds
into a fantasy world of botanical wonders

Fires Claim Star Home
http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2008/11/fires-claim-star-home.php
Back to the Future star Christopher Lloyd has lost his $6 million
house to fire, one of the many destroyed by the massive Montecito
blaze.
Other homes jeopardized in the blaze included those of Jeff Bridges,
Michael Douglas, Oprah Winfrey, and Rob Lowe.
Lowe said that his wife was out shopping when she called with the
warning: "The mountain's on fire!"
Lowe says he put the kids in the car, pulled from the driveway and saw
"flames shooting 200 feet in the air. There was literally no warning.
It came out of nowhere."

Nipper's Home Lost In Fire
http://craigsmithsblog.blogspot.com/2008/11/nippers-home-lost-in-fire.html?linkSource=edhat.com
A reader e-mailed me this morning saying that Arthur von
Wiesenberger's home on Mountain Drive was among those destroyed in the
Tea Fire. von Wiesenberger is the co-publisher of the Santa Barbara
News-Press and boyfriend of the paper's owner Wendy McCaw.
I did a quick property records search and indeed found that von
Wiesenberger is listed as the owner of property at the address of 260
Mountain Drive. The address of 260 E. Mountain Drive is among those
appearing on the County's list of homes destroyed by the fire.
According to my source, "Nipper" as he is known around town, was not
occupying the home but had instead been renting it out in recent
years. News-Press employees have been among the past tenants.
I know I've been rough on Arthur and Wendy in this blog and I don't
approve of the way they've run the paper or treated their employees,
but I take no joy in the fact that he is now among those who have lost
a home to this fire.
