'stable datum' as the foundation of any 'Gleichschaltung,' through
learned communication skills, used at the most interpersonal level,
via confusion and displacement of Scientology terminology and goals.

morale," or "I am responsible for my own condition," all become
detached from a persons identity, company or organization and tuned to

"Now this comes to solve a great many of our interesting problems. Why
is it almost impossible to take someone out of chiropracty and make a
Scientologist out of him? It's an interesting question, since it's
been with us for years. It's very simple: chiropracty was a stable
datum. Every time he has a stable datum, there was a confusion. So we
discover that the individual then, adopted chiropracty because of
anexisting confusion. And he, every time you ask him to let go of

There's one rule in auditing this, and this is the best rule to follow

confusion. You can do this for any datum, even any datum or basic law

Scientology: Mock up the confusion for which chiropracty is a stable
datum. " Never pay any more attention to chiropracty, he'll just
confuse you if you do. "Now just mock up the confusion for which
chiropracty is a stable datum." Just keep him doing this, you know,
over and over. Move the thing around. Make it -more- confused. Do
something with it to have him take under control that particular
confusion and all of a sudden, he'll say, "Well, I know Scientology
works better than chiropracty." You've been trying to convince him of
that for a long time. But every time you made him try to let go of it,
he got the confusion back.
So any idea, no matter what kind of idea, is of coure as-isable or
removable from a case as long as - and just always that wording -
"Mock up the confusion for which (blank) is the stable datum."
Just keep him doing this, you know, over and over. Move the thing
around. Make
it -more- confused. Do something with it to have him take under
control that particular confusion and all of a sudden, he'll say,
"Well, I know Scientology works better than ________."

"As a totalitarian regime the Third Reich developed its own language,
a perversion of the German language. The control of hearts and minds,
to which totalitarian political systems aspire, necessitates such a
perversion of the normal use of language. Meaning is twisted and
distorted in such a way that the citizens of a totalitarian state can
no longer distinguish truth from falsehood. They are reduced to such a
state of confusion and impotence that they can be fully manipulated by
the dictatorial government. George Orwell’s famous books 1984 and
Animal Farm are the classic fictional statements of this aspect of
totalitarianism. In 1984 there is a Ministry of Truth, modelled on the
Ministry of Propaganda and Popular Enlightenment established by
Goebbels."
Gleichschaltung is an example from the early days of the Nazi
dictatorship of this use of language to manipulate and confuse. It is
a word rarely to be found in older German dictionaries. ‘Gleich’ means
equal, ‘Schaltung’ means switch, as in an electrical switch;
Gleichschaltung therefore means switching on to the same track or
wavelength, or, to put it in one word, alignment or co-ordination. It
became, in 1933, the word for the process by which all organisations
and associations existing in society were nazified and some, such as
the political parties and the trade unions, were simply suppressed.
The word was meant to hide the fact that what was going on was in
flagrant breach of all previous notions of freedom, civil rights and
self-government. It was a way of glossing over the threat of terror
and violence that compelled individuals and organisations to come to
heel. People could say that their organisations had been
gleichgeschaltet (aligned, co-ordinated), when what had really
happened was that former colleagues, who had become politically or
racially inconvenient, had been brutally thrown out and often
subjected to physical violence. The word Gleichschaltung made it
easier for those, the vast majority, who had condoned such treatment,
to salve their consciences. There was already, in the early weeks and
months of the Third Reich, a sizeable minority of committed and even
fanatical Nazis, who welcomed these developments. They took an active
part in the violence and accepted the Nazi ideology that declared
individual rights an outmoded aspect of the now defunct liberal age.
What mattered was what was good for the Volk and the Führer was the
sole judge of that."

This I find fascinating. There is a longstanding relationship between
chiropractic and Scientology, with the e-meter being invented by a
chiropractor, many Scientologists becoming chiropractors and vice
versa, and the strong parrallel between the quasi-religious
development of the pseudo-science of chiropractic in comparison to the
quasi-religious development of the pseudo-science of Dianetics
(intergenerational automobile death anyone?). I doubt Hubbard would
lightly use chiropractic as an example; it seems clear he nearly
always plucked his examples to further a specific agenda; this all
makes me wonder what his general attitude to chiropractors was;
whether he hated them, or saw in them an easy mark - an already proven
soft target for his own theories about illness.

Dr. Palmer's arrest has been threatened if he is engaged as expert

Chiropractors instead of an opportunity for the sick to get well.
