In today's world, many informed people recognize that many, if not
most, members of their country's justice system are hostile toward
their own country's citizens. This probably comes from the fallen
nature of man along with the current godlessness of most societies.
In addition, most police and prosecutors have to prove on a daily
basis that they are (supposedly) doing their job. This incentive
skews appropriate and valid judgement and assessment when it comes
to law enforcement decisions. People who are concerned about data
security are therefore not necessarily concerned because they are
'doing something illegal or are doing something that will get you
fired'. They are simply very cautious persons who continuously
cover their tracks (or ass) in a wise attempt to prevent the
authorities from trying to use anything they say against them.
Cautions people know from many observed examples how the authorities
will try to take anything you say and misconstrue it in order to make
a case against you.
One should not forget the questioning of Scooter Libby and Martha
Stewart. They honestly cooperated with the authorities, but the
authorities were corrupted.

I think Tor is probably not for you. It's doing a great job for many
people under restrictive regimes, where being slow is only a minor
inconvenience in comparison with being completely censored out. If
learning how to configure it is too much trouble then you probably don't
need it enough.
