Finding Relief for Fibromyalgia Sufferers

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - It's a complex syndrome that baffles
doctors and debilitates patients.
There is no known cure for fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome.
In fact, some doctors still question the validity of these illnesses.
But a new breakthrough is forcing the medical community to take a
closer look.
Unexplained pain, flu like symptoms, difficulty just getting out of
bed; these are only a few of problems encountered by CFS and
fibromyalgia sufferers.
For years many patients who suffered from chronic fatigue and
fibromyalgia were told "it's all in your head". But now science is
backing up those claims.
Maureen Higham is often tired, miserable, in pain, and desperate to
just feel normal.
Higham is just one of the millions that suffer from chronic fatigue
and fibromyalgia. It is a debilitating, complex syndrome that has cost
her everything.
"You go through a period where you start to doubt yourself and you
think 'maybe I am crazy' Do crazy people think they are crazy?" says
Maureen.
For nine years this has been her life; doctor after doctor, test after
test, frustration after frustration.
"There was one doctor as we were trying so hard to find answers, he
said to me well at least it is not life threatening, and I looked at
him and I thought I'd rather it be life threatening. This is life
stealing," says Higham.
Dr. Lucinda Bateman has been working with fibromyalgia and chronic
fatigue patients for over a decade. She says nationwide, 3 to 6
million people suffer from one or both, as in Maureen's case.
Both affect the central nervous system and doctors say each patient
follows a similar pattern, with similar symptoms.
Diagnosis can be difficult, especially with CFS, but with fibromyalgia
there seems to be a more straight-forward criteria.
Fibromyalgia can usually be diagnosed through a series of 18 tender
point tests. Patients complain of widespread pain and stiffness.
For years, finding the right individual treatment has boiled down to
trial and error, but finally there has been a recent breakthrough;
something doctors and patients have been waiting for.
In June of this year, the FDA approved Lyrica, the first drug made
specifically for treating fibromyalgia. Suddenly, doctors who were
uneducated are eager to learn more, and patients have new hope.
"This is going to catapult the education of doctors into the modern
age of fibromyalgia," says Dr. Bateman.
Doctors say Lyrica reduces the release of chemicals in the brain that
amplify pain signals throughout the body.
"I think the first thing I noticed was better sleep...a better sleep
pattern where I actually laid down and sleep came to me instead of me
trying to search for it," says Richard Sloan, a fibromyalgia patient.
Sloan says it was so bad three years ago he wouldn't have been able to
walk around a park.
"After about 3 or 4 months I was like, 'wow this stuff really works',"
says Sloan.
Today, thanks to Lyrica, he's running and training for a career in law
enforcement.
"I'm able to spend better quality time with my children I don't think
enough can be said for the amount of energy that I feel. I have now,"
says Sloan
But Dr. Bateman is quick to remind patients what works for one, may
not work for others; like in the case of Maureen Higham. She's taking
Lyrica, but so far no nothing, no improvement. So, she's still
searching...still suffering.
Still, Maureen continues hoping one day she will have her life back.
"People say that to me 'I don't know how you do this. I could never do
this,' and I'm like 'give me another alternative'," says Higham.
Dr. Bateman says patients benefiting from Lyrica report an 80 percent
improvement in their pain, but there some side effects initially so
you have to weigh all those factors when you speak with your doctor.
Also there is another warning about all those herbal remedies and
"cure-alls" you find on the Internet for fibromyalgia and CFS. If they
are tied to profit, be leary.

Website Updates Now Available
The National CFIDS Foundation's website has been updated to include
many new
additions. Among them are four out of about 30 articles from both our
summer
issue and our fall issue of The National Forum. Many patients may be
particularly interested in an article from our summer issue entitled
"Naming CFIDS" as
it tells you what our foundation means when we refer to CFIDS and why
we are
able to call the disease that we are funding research for "CFS". Our
website
also now includes our IRS form that has been taken from Guidestar, the
site
that rates nonprofit charities.
Our holiday cards as well as our notecards have been sold out with
the
profits going toward research and we thank all those who helped in
this way.
Another update includes, sadly, additions to our Memorial List.

This issue has been particularly slow to arrive in the mail despite
us
having mailed the editon well over a month ago. Members should be
aware that the
issue is still being received in the mail now and we have yet to
receive our
own control issue. The winter edition of The National Forum will be
by another
mailing method instead of the bulk mail that has been so slow as we
try to
rectify this problem. The winter edition will bring an update on the
lead story
in our fall edition on Homeland Security's funding of PIV-5 research.

"Better" than the Bomb
During a routine House debate on naval appropriations last week,
Representative Albert Thomas opened his mouth a millimeter too wide.
Out popped a shocker. Said Thomas: "We have something far more deadly
than the atomic bomb. We have it today—not tomorrow—and furthermore,
it's in usable shape." Then Representative Harry Sheppard, chairman of
the Naval Appropriations subcommittee, let out more.
Said Sheppard: "This nation is in possession of scientific factors
which place it in an enviable position. The scientific factors at hand
would result in devastation equal to, if not greater than, the atomic
bomb. Remember, there are different kinds of devastation."
Skeptics suspected that the Navy, fighting doggedly against
unification of the services and jealous of the Army's atomic bomb,
might be tooting its horn too loudly. But there was still a fair
chance that the Congressmen's scuttlebutt was based on well-hidden
fact. Two novel and dreadful weapons have long been discussed, in
whispers.
Radiant Death. One of them, radioactive poisons, was mentioned briefly
and guardedly in the Smyth Report. Wrote Professor Smyth: ". . . The
fission products produced in one day's run of a 100,000 kw. chain-
reacting pile might be sufficient to make a large area uninhabitable."
The three plutonium piles at Richland, Wash. are enormously more
powerful. If Professor Smyth's estimate was right, each pile has been
producing, every day for more than a year, enough radioactive poisons
to depopulate many "large areas."
The other possibility, biological warfare, also had impressive
scientific scripture behind it. Wrote General H. H. Arnold in the book
One World or None: "It is worth while pointing out that biological
warfare, consisting of the spreading of disease, could occupy a
position similar to atomic warfare."
Living Killers. For three years, U.S. biological warfare research has
been carried on at the University of California under Navy auspices.
Virtually nothing has been published about it except that the
principal disease under study was "hundreds of years old and one of
the greatest killers." But the day after Thomas' original break, other
Congressmen, popeyed and anonymous, announced that the Navy had a
weapon which could wipe out "all forms of life" in a large city. "It
is a germ proposition and is sprayed from airplanes that can fly high
enough to be reasonably safe from ground fire. It is quick and certain
death."*
While germs are usually specialists, attacking only a limited number
of species, some form of biological warfare might be only too
practicable. Chances are that pestilence-spreaders would not use old,
familiar diseases, but would create new ones by modifying standard
bacteria or viruses. With modern knowledge of genetics and
biochemistry, this should not be impossible. Human beings would have
little natural resistance against such synthetic diseases, which might
conceivably spread, in a biological chain reaction, through the
world's entire population. Perhaps suitable diseases have already been
created in several countries, their organisms kept alive in secret,
guarded incubators.
The only defense would be mass immunization in advance. A nation
planning aggression would protect its own soldiers and citizens before
loosing its high-bred germs upon enemies and innocent bystanders. If
all went well, its territory would be left an island of health in a
world of poisonous corpses.
So far, no nation's agents had publicly reported such a suspicious
"health campaign."
