Papers Refuse to Run 'Doonesbury' Abortion Law Strip

By Bill Draper, Associated Press

10 March 12

Jim Romenesko previews this coming week's Doonesbury strip on his blog. -
JPS/RSN

national syndicate will offer replacement "Doonesbury" comic strips to
newspapers that don't want to run a series that uses graphic imagery to
lampoon a Texas law requiring women to have an ultrasound before an
abortion, executives said Friday.

A handful of newspapers say they won't run next week's series, while
several others said the strips will move from the comics to opinion pages
or websites only. Many already publish the strip by cartoonist Garry
Trudeau, whose sarcastic swipes at society's foibles have a history of
giving headaches to newspaper editors, on editorial pages.

"We run 'Doonesbury' on our op-ed page, and this series is an example of
why," said David Averill, editorial page editor for the Tulsa World.
"Many of our readers will disagree with the political stance the series
takes, and some will be offended by the clinical language. I believe,
however, that this series of strips is appropriate to the abortion debate
and appropriate to our op-ed pages."

The comic strips feature a woman who goes to an abortion clinic and is
confronted by several people who suggest she should be ashamed. Among
them is a doctor who reads a script on behalf of Texas Gov. Rick Perry
welcoming her to a "compulsory transvaginal exam," and a middle-aged
legislator who calls her a "slut."

One panel equates the invasive procedure to rape and describes the device
used to perform it as a "10-inch shaming wand."

"Our readers are accustomed to pointed political and social commentary in
strips like 'Doonesbury' and 'Mallard Fillmore,'" Tom McNiff, managing
editor of The Gainesville Sun and Ocala Star-Banner in central Florida,
said in an emailed statement explaining the decision not to run the
series. "But the language the author used to make his point in two of the
strips was quite graphic for a general readership."

Trudeau said Friday that "it would have been a little surprising" if
there hadn't been any pushback against the series.

"Abortion remains a deeply contentious subject. Having said that, the
goal is definitely not to antagonize editors and get booted from papers,"
he said in an email to The Associated Press. "It's just an occupational
risk."

Texas' law does not specify the type of sonogram a woman must receive,
but a transvaginal ultrasound is necessary to meet requirements that the
doctor show the woman an image of the fetus, describe its features and
make the fetal heartbeat audible in the first trimester. The procedure
uses a wand inserted in the vagina to yield an image instead of a wand
rubbed over a woman's belly.

Asked for comment on the "Doonesbury" series, Perry spokesman Catherine
Frazier said the governor is proud of his leadership on the sonogram law.

"The decision to end a life is not funny," Frazier said. "There is
nothing comic about this tasteless interpretation of legislation we have
passed in Texas to ensure that women have all the facts when making a
life-ending decision."

Sue Roush, managing editor at the Universal UClick syndicate, said
newspapers uncomfortable with the abortion law series have the option of
a set of substitute strips.

Steve Shirk, manager editor of The Kansas City Star, said his paper would
use the replacements in the comics section while moving the abortion
series to the opinion page.

"We felt the content was too much for many of the readers of our family
friendly comic page," Shirk said. "We felt that (op-ed) page was more
appropriate for that story line."

Dennis Ryerson, editor of the Indianapolis Star, said the newspaper would
use an earlier "Doonesbury" strip instead.

"We simply don't want to be part of the personalization and debasement of
political discourse. We've had too much of that from all sides," Ryerson
said.

Chris Mele, executive editor of the Pocono Record in Stroudsburg, Pa.,
said the paper will run the replacement strips during the week, but the
Texas series will appear March 18 on the front of its op-ed section. He
said the paper would try to "have a dialogue" with its readers about the
debate.

Universal UClick president Lee Salem said he wouldn't be surprised if 20
to 30 of the 1,400 newspapers that carry "Doonesbury" decided to opt out
and run the replacements.

"Once every five or six months there's usually something in 'Doonesbury'
that causes a stir. Every two or three years there's something that
causes a bigger stir," Salem said. "Historically, that's par for the
course with 'Doonesbury' because Garry explores topics on comics pages
that are not normally there."

Six installments of "Doonesbury" satirizing the anti-abortion movie "The
Silent Scream" were canceled in 1985 when the syndicate decided they were
too controversial to be distributed.

Other states have enacted laws requiring pre-abortion ultrasounds,
although Virginia removed a provision from its measure that specifically
called for the invasive exam. The measure in its original form had become
a target of national political columnists and the word "transvaginal" was
mocked and parodied on "Saturday Night Live" and "The Daily Show with Jon
Stewart."

"Leftist", the anti-American little minded folks who hate the
constitution because it gets in the way of the free lunch they want for
being a worthless deadbeat, typically use hate and ridicule to preach to
the choir.

No intelligent human being is going to be convinced of anything by
Trudeau's hate and ridicule other than the fact that people like him have
no morals, no ethics, and delight in being offensive.

What's funny is that newspapers are in the toilet because people
recognize them as "leftist" propaganda rags.

Actually Rush himself decided that. He has censored his "slut" rant

I can still here Rush if I choose. Now if I decide to pull
advertizing that is not for the Party to decide. Same for these
Newspapers. I did listen to what he said and decided for myself. I
just want the same on this issue.

Don't think I have ever gone to Napolitano's website and have no idea
what your talking about. Sorry.

I personally consider both sides (right and left) extremist to be
crazy.

Personally I think Texas should have their funds cut. They broke
the law.

Just think if Santorum gets elected we will all bow before the Pope
and worship graven images like he does.

You've spent much of a week calling for Rush Limbaugh to be arrested,
and now you're upset because some newspapers won't carry Doonesbury's
disgusting abortion "jokes"?

You want Rush Limbaugh and Rupert Murdock arrested, and their
operations shut down. But "Doonesbury" has to be treated with
respect.

The width of your hypocrisy grows every day. It will come to an end.

I don't know who this Judge Napolitano is, but I got curious as to what
Marvy was nattering on about. Google lists it as a possible attack site
and says the following:

Over the past 90 days, www.judgenap.com did not appear to function as
an intermediary for the infection of any sites.

Has this site hosted malware?

No, this site has not hosted malicious software over the past 90 days.

How did this happen?

In some cases, third parties can add malicious code to legitimate
sites, which would cause us to show the warning message.

Next steps:

Return to the previous page.

<Snort> Porky Jamieson believes that Doonesbury is a big part of
standard American life. Fact is that newspapers aren't even a big
part of American life these days.

Jamieson still won't address what happened to his ex-wife. Spose the
fat pig smacked her around when he was drunk?

That's from David (Zepp) Jamieson who apparently refused to
allow the woman he claims to still be married to use of his
Internet account, and then when she got fined for broken tail
lights and failure to licence the family pets, he refused to
help her pay the fines and then after a decade, she was forced
to do community service.

The truth may be that Zepp has been lying about still being
married to her and instead, she left him for reasons Zepp doesn't
want to admit.

What's porky hiding here?

Conservatives "...love..." our constitution? Or do they love an undefined constitution.

Look, drooler, you conservatives love to talk about your love for the constitution, however you want to change:
1) Direct election of senators
2) The income tax amendment
3) Eliminate or change the first amendment
4) Have another amendment that gives us another tax system getting rid of all that "fairness" stuff
5) Eliminate the 14th amendment, bring back slavery
6) Eliminate the whole idea that if you are legal in one state you are legal in another

Out side of that.......

Speech Nazi Gloria Allred Seeks Rush Limbaugh Prosecution
Posted by Jim Hoft on Friday, March 9, 2012, 8:57 PM

Far left speech Nazi Gloria Allred is back in the news. Now she wants
to silence Rush Limbaugh.

Gloria Allred sent a letter to the Palm Beach County state attorney
requesting an investigation on whether Rush Limbaugh should be
prosecuted for his attack on 30 year-old far left activist Sandra
Fluke.
The Politico reported:

Rush Limbaugh has drawn the ire of celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred,
who sent a letter to the Palm Beach County state attorney requesting
an investigation into whether the popular radio host should be
prosecuted for calling a law student a “slut” and “prostitute” last
week.

“Mr. Limbaugh targeted his attack on a young law student who was
simply exercised her free speech and her right to testify before
congress on a very important issue to millions of American women and
he vilified her. He defamed her and engaged in unwarranted, tasteless
and exceptionally damaging attacks on her,” Allred told POLITICO
Friday afternoon. “He needs to face the consequences of his conduct in
every way that is meaningful.”

Which empirical fact do you deny? That the JoD is going after Obama's
political enemies? That the Left has called for Rush's arrest?

Happily, I saved the ugly things the left posted about Britbart after
he died. I knew that you would quickly lie about what you wrote.
After all, it's the reason that you change your screen name every few
days.

If his behavior is any indication, then I would guess a meth and booze
cocktail. His site's claiming it was "natural causes", which as you
know, is a leading cause of death in 43 year old men.

But it does pose a moral dilemma for liberals and other sane
people. He died on Leap Day. Does that mean we can only observe it
once every four years?

Why should I care for a Phillistine? What did Breitbart do that
should elicit any sympathy? Did he try to clear up the disgusting,
racist editing he did to a wonderful speech by an African-American?
Nope. And he was being sued for it.
Zepp

So how much did that show about Briebart? Did it show some one
willing to accept blame? Did it show some one shocked by a bad edit
job? Nope, racist that he was he has kept up the charade, according
to him, he didn't do anything wrong.

He was a gutless coward who wanted other for fight his wars. He
wanted others to die for his amusement.

Women's Rights Are Human Rights
Saturday 10 March 2012
by: Ron Jacobs, The Rag Blog | News Analysis
Besides the fact that it celebrates women in a society primarily controlled
by men, it is the socialist roots of International Women's Day that have
discouraged its celebration in the United States.

On March 8, 1997, workers at the University of Vermont were at the beginning
of a struggle to unionize. The units of the workforce that were prime for
unionization (and most likely to vote in a union) were those units that
maintained the buildings and grounds of the university. These units were
composed of a large number of new immigrants and women.

The union we were working with was the United Electrical, Radio and Machine
Workers of America or UE. This union is one of the few U.S. unions that
refused to kick leftists out of the union in 1948 and is therefore not part
of the AFL-CIO. We held a rally that day at the university. We chose March 8
because of its importance as International Women's Day. It was the first
that many of the workers had ever heard of this day.

Unknown to most U.S. residents, International Women's Day has its roots in a
strike by female garment workers in New York City. On March 8, 1857, these
textile workers marched and picketed to demand improved working conditions,
a 10-hour day, and equal rights for women. The police attacked the march.

On March 8, 1908, women textile workers marched again, recalling the 1857
march and demanding the vote, and an end to sweatshops and child labor. The
police attacked this march, also.

Two years later, revolutionary Clara Zetkin urged the international
socialist Second International to adopt March 8th as a holiday honoring the
struggle for women's rights. The motion passed.

Besides the fact that it celebrates women in a society primarily controlled
by men, it is the socialist roots of International Women's Day that have
discouraged its celebration in the United States. After all, this is a
nation that created Labor Day to prevent workers from celebrating May Day,
even though that workers' holiday was established in the United States in
the late nineteenth century.

The insistent capitalism of America's ruling classes will not so much as
even acknowledge a holiday determined by the workers that celebrates
something besides the domination of Wall Street and Washington. Nonetheless,
both holidays continue to be celebrated in the United States, albeit not on
the same scale as elsewhere.

The first that many U.S. residents alive today became aware of International
Women's Day was in the late 1960s and 1970s. Thanks to the leftist
foundations of the feminist movement that developed in those years,
International Women's Day was retrieved from the dustbin of history where it
had been tossed. Since those days, it has been consistently celebrated by
most women's groups, much of organized labor, and even given a mention by
some elected officials.

However, like so many other movements with their current roots in the
struggles of the 1960s, the women's rights movement is much more than a
single holiday. Just like people did not protest, go to jail, fight the
police, and even die so that school children can celebrate Martin Luther
King, Jr.'s birthday every January, neither have women and their allies
fought merely to wear a ribbon or attend a celebration of International
Women's Day every March 8.

Women's rights have always been human rights. The very fact that this day
has its roots in a labor struggle proves that. Women and girls comprise much
of the workforce, the student population and, in some nations, the military.

In today's world, where the wars and economic policies of neoliberalism
force millions of people to leave their homes and countries, it is the women
that make up the bulk of those refugees. Given that females continue to be
the primary caregivers of the human species, it becomes even clearer that
their struggle is synonymous with the struggle for human rights. Yet, every
day the news is full of attacks on those rights.

In the United States, the right wing and many Christian churches are
conspiring to deny easy and affordable access to an essential element of
health care -- birth control. At the same time, budget cuts on both state
and federal levels are targeting low-income children and women, leaving many
of them without essential needs like food, shelter, and health care. These
budget cuts are the direct result of polices that cut taxes for the rich,
fund the war industry at ever greater cost, and attach more and more riders
on the tax burdens of working people.

Meanwhile, unemployment maintains a relatively constant level of several
million capable workers and real wages continue to sink. In other countries
in the western neoliberal zone, like Greece, Spain, and Portugal, the
situation is even direr.

Meanwhile, most women in countries that are part of what economists call the
developing world are in even worse straits. Many of them have never lived in
anything other than a refugee camp. Education is something not even
considered for their male children much less for themselves or the girls in
their families.

Tribal and ethnic wars that are exacerbated by the neoliberal economic
crisis bring death and illness without warning. Other wars brought on by
Washington and Wall Street's perceived need for hegemony create their own
havoc and death. Religious fanatics whose similarities with their kinsmen in
the United States and the Vatican outweigh their differences do their best
to insure women remain subjugated to their medieval belief systems.

The list continues. It is apparent that the need for a women's movement as
represented by those textile workers who took to the streets of Manhattan
over a hundred years ago exists as much as it ever did. From Manhattan to
Mumbai, from Beijing to Bagdad, the struggle for women's rights and lives is
the struggle for human rights and lives.

On the day he left a young widow and for young orphans? It's funny
because you get to kick someone when they can't fight back.

So, this is the sort of compassion Atheism creates, huh? More and

Bill Maher is smart enough to condemn this activity. But then, Bill
Maher is actually funny and not an idiot. He can read the writing on
the wall - he understands that if Democrats can arrest Rush, then a
Republican administration can shut down HBO.

Hmmm. Even if you're demented enough to think that either or both of us
is secretly Gloria Allred (and granted, you're pretty fucking crazy, so
you might), there's the fact that "prosecuted" doesn't mean "arrested".

I missed something who is Gloria and by what law is she calling

You want him beheaded. In all my life I have never encountered anyone so
pathologically obsessed with the fat fool; not even the "Dittohead" I
worked with in the 1990s made Rush his sole topic of conversation.

Sometimes I wonder if Rush Limbaugh is the creation of the Democrat Party
Propaganda Bureau. He seems to serve the role of Orwell's Emmanuel
Goldstein, a fictional caricature that the Party created to serve as a
focus for the proles' hatred. I can't help but notice that those quoting
everything Rush says are leftards, not rightards. Rightards have better
things to do (like work) than listen to his stupid show, whereas leftards
have no jobs and have infinite amounts of time to sit around listening to
him hoping to be offended. The more offensive Rush is, the more leftards
demand that the Party save them from his heretical ideas.

True, which is why private newspapers have every right to refuse to
publish Trudeau's comic strip. And the reason they are doing this is
because they are afraid that advertisers will pull their ads.

Despite its liberal slant, I've enjoyed reading Doonesbury since I was a
kid. Trudeau's liberalism is subtle, not like the ideological stick
leftards like you smack people upside the head with. But in this case,
Trudeau appears to be bleating the Party line regarding the birth control
insurance mandate. Like Limbaugh, Trudeau has a First Amendment right to
express his opinion; conversely, nobody is required to subsidize his
opinion, and advertisers have a constitutional right to withdraw their
ads if they feel that association with him will harm their public image.

A prosecution requires an indictment, which USUALLY requires an arrest.
It is possible to indict somebody who hasn't been apprehended (e.g.,
George W. Bush), but under U.S. law it is not possible to prosecute him
until he has been captured and formally arrested.

Wasn't Gloria Allred one of O.J. Simpson's lawyers, who argued that the
murder charges against him were the result of a racist conspiracy?

Can't condemn something that hasn't happened. Fake Bill thinks Gloria
Allred is demanding that Rush Limbaugh be arrested. She thinks he should
be prosecuted for slander, which isn't the same thing. You don't
generally get arrested on civil charges.

In other words, Fake Bill is nuts.

Sued for what? Slander and libel is a false accusation against someone.
Calling someone a "slut" is not an accusation but an OPINION. The
alleged slut is free to complain, but she has no grounds for a libel
lawsuit.

Rush compared Sandra Fluke to a prostitute, which is a constitutionally
protected OPINION. Had he called her an actual prostitute, saying he saw
her working the corner of Larkin and Geary last Saturday night when she
was not, then it becomes slander. Consider the implications of allowing
every woman who has been called a "bitch" to sue for slander, on the
grounds that she is not really a female dog.

While we're on the subject of sluts, we should ask why Ed Schultz -- a
left-wing MSNBC political commentator -- is being given a free pass for
calling right-wing radio host, Laura Ingraham, a "slut." Same derogatory
term, with the only difference being the politics of the puffy-faced,
beady-eyed male chauvinist pig uttering it. Unlike Sandra Fluke, Laura
Ingraham has not expressed an opinion on sex-related subjects, making the
accusation of being a "slut" truly slanderous. What are the chances of
Ms. Ingraham getting Gloria Allred to help her sue for damages?

"Rush Limbaugh has drawn the ire of celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred,

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0312/73829.html

The last time I checked, the Palm Beach County state attorney doesn't
handle civil lawsuits.

They do criminal cases. Gloria Allred has found what is almost
certainly a couple of hundred year old statue that is clearly
unconstitutional, and demanded it be used to people with opposing
political views.

To sum up:

You want Rush arrested for using the word "slut" - you also demand
that newspapers be forced against their wills to carry a comic strip
in which one character calls another a "slut."

I believe psychologists call your condition a "cognitive disconnect."

Reeeeeeaaaaalllllllllllly? So, having the DoJ try and dig up dirt on
FOX News is ok, Rush being arrest is OK, but privately owned
newspapers refusing to carry material they find offensive is
"censorship"?

Are you saying that the DoJ should send in the Navy Seals, and force
newspapers to carry "Doonesbury"?

You may have a point. Those that claim Rush is a Pedophile are

So if you have a opinion on sex then that opens the door to being
a slut? Never did hear if she had multiple partners or just one
person. Even if married they in my opinion should put off having kids
until after they graduate.

I hold left and right to the same standard mostly, being a

Rush won't be arrested. Won't happen. Even if sued in civil
court doubt he'd lose. He has been punished made to look the fool and
took a hit to the pocketbook. Hopefully he has learned that even he
has limits.

I don't know if he was even arrested for being a drug addict. He
did say people that did what he did should be put away and the key
threw away. Guess he just meant everyone else.

Who's censoring "Doonesbury"? Newspapers are simply refusing to carry
him - that's very different than censorship.

Censorship would be the Fairness Doctrine.

Censorship would the the Department of Justice harassing the owner of
FOX News.

Censorship would be a DA arresting Rush Limbaugh for making a joke.

Censorship would be the DoJ going to the Supreme Court and insisting
the President had the right to ban virtually all mass media two months
before a national election, and one month before a local election or
national primary.

All of which you support.

And now you expect people to become upset because Trudeau got bumped
for a week from a few newspaper?

When it's done by a State Attorney, that's EXACTLY what it means.

Allred "...sent a letter to the ****PALM BEACH COUNTY STATE

radio host should be prosecuted for calling a law student a “slut” and
“prostitute” last week."

The "wrong God", says you?

I spent a few minutes reviewing what you had posed in the past.
Here's something you wrote to a stated that it's either immoral to
kill sentient life, or it's not:

"My father and his mates once stumbled upon someone like you. It was
in Italy, in a farmyard. The man's belly had burst open and was now
full of maggots and flies buzzed around the corpse. The head was so
black and swollen that the features were unrecognisable. The uniform
was stained, but still sported SS Runes on it. One of the local
peasants said that a group of SS had rounded up hostages from the
village and shot them. This one strayed too far, and the old farmer
protected his daughter and grandchildren by killing him with a
shotgun.

I thought that you might wish to meditate upon this fact, and what can
happen to people who think as you do....

And when Steve talked about unions, you wrote:

"They pulled his pants down and smeared his balls with oil and heavy
duty grease, the kind that's almost impossible to get rid of. That's
the traditional fate of blacklegs."

The Doonesbury cartoon wasn't on my toast this morning, either.
CENSORSHIP!

On the other hand, when Gloria Allred urges the state to arrest Rush
for violation of a 19th Century law which nobody has ever bothered to
repeal, that's just proof that "the system works".

These fools cannot stand to be the subject of satire at all. Its the
worst thing they can imagine and the very reason that all but a few
satirical shows have been shut down.

You honestly believe that people don't know what you're talking

Have they? Well, I'm sure you can provide examples.

When did Trudeau call anyone a slut?

Did he ever call a 12 year old girl a dog?

Does he mock the poor, minorities and women?

Satire is a lie made to win an argument that cannot be made using logic
and actual facts. Ridicule is much more effective against ignorant masses
than facts and logic. For example, you admire satire and ridicule. Q.E.D.

The funny thing is that Doonesbury doesn't just target the right;
liberals and the left are fair game for Trudeau, too.

But the right are brittle and have no sense of humour whatsoever, so
they're the ones who whine that they are being victimized.
