Why is WAR Coverage Censored, Now?
Wide Eyed in Wonder
television about how the war is going...deaths of soldiers...or for
that matter deaths of innocents? Indeed, there have been about 3 U.S.
rocket attacks on civilian areas in the past week, but how many
stories of dead babies in the street have you heard about?
Take it further than the news. Last fall, I recall seeing a war
related movie on television almsot every night, reminding people how
bloody war can be. Since Obama has proposed more than doubling our
troops in a region that RUSSIA couldn't conquer, has there been ANY
war movies on non-pay television stations? Suddenly, war is somthing
that just happens and isn't a concern, anymore...now that OBAMA is our
commander in chief (it hurts to even type that).

The Obama administration has reversed the long-standing Bush policy
that the arrival of coffins containing dead U.S. soliders cannot be
shown on the news. So who is censoring what where now, exactly?
Movies don't come out within minutes of changes in administrations or
foreign policies. They take time. We were fighting in Iraq and
Afghanistan for a number of years before we started getting movies
that touched on those conflicts; they we got a whole bunch (that were,
as always, years in the making); then people had seen enough of them,
none of them were great financial successes, and the studios stopped
making them. When they decide that people aren't bored with them
anymore, they'll make more.
This whole cycle took place before Obama became president. Similarly,
news coverage of the conflict in Iraq dropped off while Bush was still
president. The presidential primaries and election, and then - even
more so - the financial crisis (which currently leads the news every
day) pushed military coverage pretty much out of the way.
This does not represent censorship, or some sort of conspiracy. The
news, movie and TV studios give the people what they think they will
be interested in seeing. For a while we had some Middle East war
movies; now we have "financial thrillers" like International. This
kind of entertaiment cycle is absolutely ordinary.
Do you think Obama's thrilled with the headline every day being "More
Bad News for the Economy"? (Salon.com, well-known liberal rag: "It's a
Depression.") Do you think he likes the fact that the American people
are reminded every day in the papers that he hasn't fixed all their
problems yet?
Apophenia on legs. You see censorship and pro-Obama conspiracies in
the ordinary workings of the entertainment business; in the fact that
the news, just like the American people are more concerned right now
with the immediate problems of the economic crisis than with what
effects the changes Obama is planning for Afghanistan MIGHT have.
I just can't figure out whether you are being deliberately misleading,
or are actually delusional. I suppose it depends on the day.
