Dear CW'ers. friends and supporters:
Come to KC and protest our new nuke-parts plant on Sept 7-8 and Oct 6-7
Catholics Workers and their widespread communities are toughing it out
as the backbone of civil resistance to Kansas City’s 61-year-old
nuke-parts plant and its replacement. On June 18, the first four to
commit CD included two current CW from IA and MO and one longtime CW
supporter. That’s 3 of 4. On Aug. 16, among the 14 to commit
wholehearted CD were 9 were from current CW communities, 2 former
CWer’s, and 2 who “swim with the CW tribe,” to use Frank Cordaro’s
phrase. That’s 13 of 14. Lucky lottery numbers!
New chances for Catholic Workers from near and far to engage in KC
activism as full-fledged resisters or support folk:
• Sept. 7-8, with Sept. 7 being an all-day planning-and-preparing
extravaganza before the Sept. 8 groundbreaking for the new plant. Come
to KC Sept. 6, Labor Day, and jump into the strategy and artwork
starting at 10 a.m. Sept. 7 at All Souls Unitarian Universalist
Church, 4501 Walnut, KC, Mo. For free lodging (bring sleeping bag or
say you need a real live bed) or bed-and-breakfast (you pay) for Sept.
6-8, contact Jane Stoever at 913-206-4088, janeps...@yahoo.com.
• Oct. 6-7, with Oct. 6 being a prep day for activities related to the
Oct. 7 municipal court hearing at 11 a.m. for the 14 people arrested
Aug. 16. Contact Jane re lodging.
A swarm of CWers and their friends beefed up both the June 18 and the
Aug. 16 resistances as supporters. After the 14 CD-ers blocked a
Caterpillar Aug. 16, some stragglers wandered in front of another big
Cat, sitting still at the time, and soon, the other 20 earth-movers
came to a standstill. Gina Cook, staff member at KC’s Holy Family CW
House, was holding her ground before the first Cat, as was Rachael
Hoffman, also a Holy Family staffer. “I saw you!” Gina told one of the
stragglers later. “You stopped all the other vehicles!” The group as a
whole shut down the earth-stripping for two hours and kicked off a Web
frenzy of news stories and pics, including those from Joshua McElwee
in National Catholic Reporter Online,
http://ncronline.org/news/peace/catholic-activists-arrested-kansas-city-nuclear-weapons-facility.
Dorothy Day would say: Come on over to KC and help us tell the world
we want green jobs, not mean jobs! At the field that last year
sprouted soybeans, we want beans, not bombs!
Love
Jane Stoever
