Security officer: Y-12 protesters used 'aggressive' tactics

KNOXVILLE -- The protesters show up at the Y-12 gates every week, but
these were different.

"Our research indicated they used more aggressive tactics than the
local protesters," Chris Seals, a Wackenhut security police captain,
testified today in U.S. District Court. "Our count that day was
150-200 protesters."

Federal prosecutors say 13 of those protesters took the July 5 rally
too far and trespassed on U.S. Department of Energy property outside
the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge. Testimony continued
today in the misdemeanor trial of a dozen of those activists.

Another protester will be tried separately because of illness.

The activists, some local and some from out of state, say they were
obeying a higher law. They and their lawyers spent the morning
questioning Y-12 manager Ted Sherry about what goes on beyond the blue
line.

"At the height of the Cold War, the U.S. had more than 30,000 nuclear
weapons in stockpile," Sherry testified. "Since that time it's been
reduced significantly. The latest nuclear policy review has as its
target to bring us down to 1,550. We have over the past five years
increased our throughput in dismantlement (of weapons)."

"Do you believe all the nuclear weapons the United States has are
perfectly safe, immune from accidental launch or explosion?" asked
Bradford Lyttle, a protester who's acting as his own lawyer.

"I think they're incredibly safe," Sherry said.

More details as they develop online and in Wednesday's News Sentinel.
