I don't recall seeing a "day rate" for the conference advertised.  I don't believe RID has offered a day in quite a while.  It is possible to purchase separate tickets for the entertainment events/receptions.

There is no charge for the Business Meeting, as several have pointed out.  As Debbie Arment points out, it is wise to arrive early and I would say it would make good sense to contact the office and find out exactly what the protocol is for "registering" for the Business Meetings...e.g. having your valid/current membership card with you and a picture ID, etc.

I think it's worth asking about the possibility of a special registration fee for the Community Forum, since it is a "stand alone" event.

I think it's also worth encouraging RID to go back to providing the option of a day rate registration.   It's hard for me to think of (off the top of my head) of another organization that does not provide this option for a lengthy conference.

Finally, I think it is very important to press forward on the effort to establish a "remote" participation mechanism for members who cannot attend a business meeting in person, including a voting mechanism.   The past feasibility investigation, and the final report on that investigation, were far from helpful or convincing.

Sincerely,

Yes EJ, right again. Your membership in good standing allows you to vote at any meeting (assuming you are a member in a voting category). I would underscore arriving early so that you can get a voting card. Maybe Maria's call will prompt them to be ready for people attending only the business meetings. There are several member that have gone to just the meetings for a number of years.

Even though common sense dictates a certified member in good standing can
attend and vote at the Business Meetings without registering, with RID's

Confirmed. I was told by RID staff that registration is NOT a requirement

I don't see why, as a member in good standing, I would have to pay anything to attend a business meeting of an organization. I would not care about anything else, including CEU's or any other part of the conference. Doesn't seem right.

    Perhaps we should inquire....

There is an open community event that follows the Community Forum that is also free. There will be entertainment, food and a chance to either continue discussions from the forum or just catch up with friends. This is also open to the Deaf community.

From the efforts of many, the wheels are turning...

For those of you coming, or thinking of coming please invite someone from the Deaf community to come with you. If you know people in Indiana, tell them about these events.

Also invite someone who doesn't go to RID events because they don't feel comfortable or welcome. We need to make a genuine and personal invitation to the greater community to be a part of these discussions so we can get back on track.
The first step is  to reach out and invite.

We are trying to see if we can do a live feed or twitter feed from the Forum so I will let you know if that will happen.

Respectfully,
Lynnette Taylor

I am planning to go to Indy just for the Community Forum and the business meetings.  There are many people I know planning to do the same, so it will be interesting for RID to see a large turnout for those events (which do not require registration) compared to the full conference.  It is worth it to me to be there and have my opinions heard at those events.

Please consider attending.

I believe that if many people attend the Community Forum and the Business Meeting without registering for the conference, that will send a very loud and clear message to the Board and the National Office.

RID does offer a day rate of $225/day, but this option can only be purchased at the door: http://rid.org/conferences/calendar/index.cfm/AID/223

Currently, RID is running a promotion for $100 off regular registration for members whose members' CEU cycle expires in 2013 or 2014- the promo code is CEUBLITZ13.  Unless, you're only planning on attending for 1-2 days, registering for the full conference is probably the cheaper option.

Hope this helps!

I HIGHLY recommend the Community Forum for everyone who can attend. If I didn't have to be someone's groomsman (ironically a mere 2 hour drive away in Indy), I would be there. I will miss it sorely.

Please go. The dialogue that occurs at the Community Forums is the exactly what RID and EVERY interpreter should be listening (read: EYES-TAKE-IN) to right now.

Best,

Someone please tell me this is all a nightmare!

I just cannot believe that with all this discussion about the frustrations
of Deaf members (and us hearing interpreters who are outraged at the
Board's insensitive and oppressive handling of so many issues) the Board
has decided to gain our trust by slapping the hands of the DAC!

I am trying to understand the Board's thinking about following protocol.
Under other circumstances, I might be in agreement. I believe that the DAC
would have first gone to the new Executive Director had he been in his
position at the time of these incidents, but because of their discomfort
with (and distrust of) the home office staff, they took the transparent
route. Perhaps if there were more transparency from RID, we wouldn't have
this mess. Perhaps if there were Deaf people and IDPs on the Board, we
could have had a meaningful dialogue instead of the Board publicly
    reprimanding the DAC.

The positive side to all of this is that change WILL happen. The passion
that has been displayed is a result of years of passivity and frustration
in trying to make this organization OURS. I look forward to the conference
and the next 50 years of integrity, accountability, transparency, and
quality that we can work towards with Deaf people.

I am eager to see further discussion.

This was my comment to Sean Gerlis' vlog from yesterday, which I wrote
several hours before the Board's vlog went out:
Sean, thanks for this posting. As RID drifts away from its roots and
systematically silences its Deaf leaders (3 in the past year) it becomes
ever more important for community action. I have been a staunch supporter
of RID and a believer of working within the system for the past 17 years.
Unfortunately, I do not believe change can come from within any longer. Too
many of us have seen the damage that is done when native voices go unheeded.

    Here is the vlog:

    A couple of points:

    1) The DAC vlog seems more like whistle-blowing than a formal complaint.
The Board can feel blindsided all it wants, but that doesn't mean that DAC
    can't do what it did.

    2) Yes, there are all kinds of rules protecting the rights of employees...
only the DAC aren't RID employees. We don't work for the RID. RID works for
us.The Board may be constrained about what they can talk about by the
Bylaws. the P&P, etc.... but the membership isn't.
