Hi everyone,

The uclue.com public beta test has started, and you are welcome to
join in. The first question has already been posted.

You can find us at http://uclue.com/

You can browse freely, but you must register if you wish to post
comments or questions.

It's a true beta test, so please be patient and understanding if there
are some problems along the way...

Looking forward!

Regards,
Roger

Researchers who were active at GA may contact me for details of how to
become uclue researchers.

At this time, we are not able to take on any other researchers, but
maybe in the future if the question volume grows high enough...

I seem to have heard this before; can't quite place it?

also on the plus side, you can ask a question with the word "uclue" in
it, and the question isn't locked for the weekend.

That's right. We're not exclusive! We're ucluesive.

Yes, Cab, but this is only the Public Beta version ...

Maybe someone is already working on a ucluebot?

Or, worse, maybe the dreaded G**glebot has been watching developments
and is waiting the right time to pounce.

These creatures will not be denied!

Questions:
How is the new service being or going to be publicized?
Are we all shopping at one another's yard sales, or are any new
customers appearing (with new cash)?
Is there any way (e.g., through keywords) to capture search queries
that were addressed to GA?
And does the young man who wrote the "Save Google Answers" song know
about this phoenixlike rebirth?

i, too, have got a few comments/questions about the uclueniverse (hat
tip to markvmd; surely even those of you who don't like "ucluetian"
can get behind mark's equivalent of GAaxy).

like tryx, i am curious how the ucptb plan on publicizing uclue. i
thought buying adsense ads on the old google answers page would have
been a good idea, but of course then i noticed the old google answers
page doesn't have ads. curses, foiled again.

also, from the responses to my free question, it appears that so far
(perhaps by design, i don't know) there are very few questioners i
don't recognize. a few new names, but i'm pretty sure several are
people we know by other handles.

also, why did bryan choose to shorten his screen name?

also, i was going to do it myself (until i decided it would be a
little presumptuous), but i think eiffel should start "what do you
like about us" and "what don't you like about us" threads here. i've
provided feedback to them via email, and will continue to do so, but i
think it would be interesting to see other people's feedback too. so
i can say "yeah, me too" or "cool, i wish i'd thought of that".

also, i wish the number of comments was displayed so i could see where
the action was.

also, i obviously disagree that "ucluetian" isn't perfect, but agee
that anything ending in "-ette" is lame. i used to dislike "peanuts"
but it grew on me. how about "clueful", "clueless", and "clue-nuts"
for researchers, questioners, and commenters?

ok, i'm done.

Thanks for your ideas, Mark. I too would like to see an open thread
of site-related comments and suggestions. Maybe Roger would even like
to respond publicly.

I'm not in favor of any name, nickname, label, or tag that is self-
deprecating, dumb-sounding, or insulting, no matter how very tamely
and mildly so. I will not buy any "for dummies" book because I am not
a dummy, and I will not subscribe to any service that dubs me
"clueless" because I seek to expand my understanding or garner gems of
knowledge from experts. Sorry, but words are important to me, and
names are the most important words. There is no reason why the labels
*have* to be derived from the name of the service, which (just
guessing) might not have been first choice in an open field.

Sorry. I meant thanks, CAB. I was replying to your message but got
sidetracked searching two sites (cluelessly) for the comment by Mark
that you referenced. It wasn't easy, but I found it, and now I forget
where, or I would post it for the benefit of others.

source for mark's coinage (i actually see now i altered it; i suppose
mark should have the final say on proper spelling):

http://groups.google.com/group/GAalumni/browse_thread/thread/4567d967cc306166

the thread above is also where i sort of take credit for ucluetian, if
it sticks. tryx, don't think of it as sounding like an ethnicity or a
nationality; think of it as sounding like a variation on aleutian; a
very cool place i've always wanted to go.

how about GOKs, SOKs, and MOCs (givers of knowledge, seekers of
knowledge, and makers of comments)?

Word of mouth, guerilla marketing, press releases, and AdSense.

Indeed it has been by design. We decided that GA Alumni was the first
place we would publicise uclue. The beta is less than a week old, and
there are some things that urgently need to be worked on before the
masses hit. Now we are spreading the word further afield, and new
questioners are starting to trickle in. We should very soon see more
as the news spreads.

Feel free to start threads like that here. I'll read every suggestion
but may not be able to respond to them individually.

I've received a lot of valuable feedback already, and at the moment I
have a list of worthwhile improvements that's several metres long - so
it might be a while before I can implement new suggestions.

The credits show three authors/producers, at least one of whom is an
ex GA Researcher who does know about uclue.

For those who haven't seen the video yet, here's the URL:

If some talented person wants to post a video followup, that would be
fabulous!
