Aboriginals Pledge to Conduct Ongoing Studies on Contaminants in the Athabasca
River and the Peace-Athabasca Delta
Fort Chipewyan-November 16, 2007-Aboriginals pledge to conduct
further research to add to Dr. Kevin Timoney's extensive study showing
elevated levels of contaminants in the sediment, water, fish and wildlife in
the Athabasca and Peace Athabasca-Delta regions.
The Nunee Health Board
Society (NHBS) of Fort Chipewyan report A Study of Water and Sediment Quality
as Related to Public Health Issues, Fort Chipewyan, Alberta, released last
week is now publicly accessible at http://www.connectingthedrops.ca/stories/georgep
Commissioned by the NHBS and conducted by Dr. Kevin Timoney of
Treeline Ecological Research, the study has confirmed the worst fears of
residents that industrial activity in the Athabasca tarsands may be linked to
rare cancers, health issues, and poor water quality.
The NHBS,
represented by the Athabasca Chipewyan and Mikisew Cree First Nations and the
Metis Local Association #125 have unanimously agreed to conducting further
studies of contaminants in the Athabasca River and the Peace-Athabasca
Delta.
