Lincoln
Street Green Strip Ribbon Cutting
Monday, May 18, 11:00am
At the corner of Lincoln Street & Royal Street
Celebrate with us the formal opening of this beautiful space with Mayor Menino, the artists, and community residents. Light
refreshments will be served after the ribbon-cutting.
Developed by the Allston Brighton Community Development Corporation (ABCDC) with artist team Legge Lewis Legge, the Lincoln Street Green Strip public art project has rehabilitated the strip of land next to the Cambridge Street stairway connecting the Allston retail district to the residential area along Franklin, Mansfield, and Royal Streets.
The design was developed through Art and Community Landscapes (ACL), a national public art program that addresses local environmental issues through the creation of site-specific art. The artists were selected from a highly competitive applicant pool by a panel that included community representatives, ABCDC, the National Parks Service, the National Endowment for the Arts, and professional artists. Their design was developed with much input from community residents.
The site's natural foliage and steeply sloped terrain have been preserved and will be maintained into a hybrid urban meadow. The parterres and vertical ornaments of graffiti-resistant weathering steel imply pathways extended along the diagonals of an existing bicycle ramp. In winter and spring, the eight low parterres emboss the slope with ornate patterns that dominate the site, but are softened and then partly obscured by meadow in the summer and fall.
Major funding was provided by the City of Boston’s Department of Neighborhood Development Grassroots program.
Funded in part by Art & Community Landscapes a partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Park Service and the New England Foundation for the Arts with additional support from Anonymous.

Dear JWplaster,
Thank you for your concern about the Lincoln Street Green Strip. The space is intended to have an unfinished look, an urban meadow with public art, with the movement of the tall grasses, contrasted with raised grasses in the steel parterres, being part of the intended design. As you have already seen, the embossed designs made by the core-ten steel parterres are most prominent in winter and early spring, and that effect will be softened by the grasses during summer and fall. As you may know, the landscape design for the space and its artwork was determined through a juried process that involved neighborhood residents and local artists. The Allston Brighton CDC has committed to an ongoing maintenance of the site, and we just had a team of volunteers there today to help us selectively weed the site in order to continue its transformation into meadow (broadleaf weeds were pulled out). An earlier cleanup and weeding occurred last month. We hope to see you at the event on Monday.
