Many of the Porsche history books by various authors have pics of these cars.  The surprise for me was that they were much larger than most cars of the era. The in-wheel electric has made a reappearance, esp. in motor cycles and scooters. I'm waiting a bit (??) longer, till good batteries get cheaper or cheap batteries get better, to try out the system in a retro-fit to my 1959 Berkeley sports car (English), which came from the factory at around 700 lb with its 2-stroke motorcycle motor that put out about 20 hp, so should be able to use the bigger 'cycle wheel-motors.  Just need batteries that won't up the weight to over 1000 lb. Maybe by 2098, or even by 2059.  Who knows, if batteries get good enough and cheap enough, maybe converting my 914 will happen, too. ('Voltswagen' has a kit, but battery weight comes in from 700 to 1000 lb, depending on the system/ desired cruising range.)

    Hey there -

This just came by in the automobile atlanta newsletter as a bit of trivia I thought interesting:

    > ... Ferdinand’s first major engineering project. The Lohner-Porsche was an engineering masterpiece at the time that seated 4. In 1898, when Porsche was 23 years of age, the car was first developed as an internal combustion – battery electric hybrid. Later, in 1901, Porsche worked on a system that involved four electric motors with one located at each wheel.

A wheel motor electric by Porsche in 1901 - I'd love to see one of those!

Oh, yeah-- batteries (as I mentioned in my above posting, 10 minutes ago):  Porsche has just announced the release of a Lithium-based 12V starter battery for its lightest 911s, Boxsters, and Caymens.  One 12-v battery, weighing about 1/3 the standard battery weight, costs $1700.  Lets see:  If I need 12 for my conversion, that'll cost me. . .  just over $20,000.  If I need 20-- yeah, a lot more.
