i figured this is a good time to explain what this is and why you use
it and how to use it.

x-no-archive: yes

means, hey, deja-news, and other archives, i don't want you to keep
this post. i'm sharing it now for a reason, but i don't want someone
to be able to access this post later and be able to somehow harass me
or something along those lines.

in order for x-no-archive to work, it *must* be the *very first line
of a post* all by itself. some newsreaders have an option to put it in
the headers. (***edited 13sept00: if you put the x-no-archive: yes
line in your header, mention this at the beginning of your post.
otherwise, people may not know to honor it. if you are replying to a
post that says their x-no-archive: yes is in the headers, please honor
this by adding the line to the beginning of your reply.***)

but if you put in the first line of your post, and then people follow
up and don't include the x-no-archive: yes line, or include it
incorrectly, well, your comments are archived anyway, in someone
else's post, which often includes the original posters email address,
so a search on that person's email address can actually bring it up
anyway.

so... if someone has put an x-no-archive: yes in their post, and you'd
like to follow up, please do this if you are going to respond
publically: make sure that the*very first line* of your post is

x-no-archive: yes

all by itself. this means it can not be below an attribution, or
below any other text. if you have a > or : or any other symbol used
for quoting in that line, it won't work. if it's used later in the
post you make, it won't work.

my very post now, itself *will* be archived, even though the phrase
x-no-archive: yes is all over it, because it is not in the proper
place.

its not something that happens very often here on rmt-a. i've used
it, nymsa's used it, i believe abby has used it... but if someone's
using it they have a good reason that's important to them.

and if i haven't explained this well, or if you are still unsure, it
may be best to just reply via private email to the person you want to
respond to.

edited, 13sept00:

perhaps you don't agree with the notion of x-no-archive: yes, and
would not choose to use it yourself when posting. that's fine.
everyone's entitled to an opinion. however, as a member of this
community --USENET-- please honor the wishes of those you share the
community with.
