No, you're not seeing double. We're doing a test of different cover
images on the June issue of Bicycling. Subscribers and half of our
newsstand copies got lovely Kilyn Benham riding her bike. The other
half of newsstand received a closeup of her off the bike. Those of
you who have seen both, which one do you like? What do you think of
Bicycling's covers in general?

I wonder if owning a bike like that is a pre-requisite for modeling for
cover shots. Or maybe, they provide it as compensation! If so, sign me up!!
Hey Bicycling, you listening out there? :-)

The angle wouldn't be quite right for it, but perhaps she's really cool
and runs the mega-powerful mushmaster Marinovate brakes (stoplight, cheap
trick, or decelerator) which uses side-entry cable routing. In fact, I think
some other cottage brake companies (doesnn't *everyone* make a pair of brakes)
have copied Ben Capron's design. For Phil -(budding) linguist, not rocket
scientist. Maybe this sheds some light on the weird cable routing, but we
can always ask Bicycling on line! Whatever...

dolan.
=o= I like seeing something other than white guys with
white teeth. Both pictures are a welcome departure.
=o= The close-up didn't match the text inside, which
mentioned some brand name for a helmet or somesuch
that wasn't in the picture.
> What do you think of Bicycling's covers in general?
=o= Not enough variation. Sometimes in the past I couldn't
even be sure whether a new issue'd come out. That's gotten
better lately, though.
=o= I'm not overjoyed with seeing Lotsa New Bikes 'n' Gear
every month, but I guess that's basically what the magazine's
about. If you really want to experiment, try these covers:
o A real live multiply-pierced tattooed bike messenger
with a beat-up clunker.
o Put me on the cover! I've only got one piercing and
no visible tattoos. I'll gladly pose with my 1989
Specialized Rock Combo (festooned with "Bikes Not
Bombs" stickers and 1993 bottom-of-the-line STI
levers) wearing my usual biking outfit.
o Check out the "Bicycling and Recycling" calendars
for great bike photos.
o Here's a real original one: Have Gorby in a USSR
cycling team with the logo from one of your best
advertisers replacing his birthmark!
o Lotsa good closeups can be found at any Critical
Mass ride, especially big ones like San Francisco's.

YES!!!

Oh, me too, me too! My teeth are all there, but chin, upper lip
and nose bear slightly discolored scars (which look like Maori war
tatoos) from a nose-dive taken on the Grand Corniche in Nice, France
four years ago. And then there's the shark-bite marks on the left
knee from a spear-fishing incident in Hawaii last Christmas...
Face it. People who actually ride their bikes and and actually do
stuff "outside" (lets take a potshot at "outside" magazine as well)
do NOT in general have perfect skin and teeth.
Adventure means danger, and danger means the occasional scar, a bit of
frostbite, maybe a missing finger, a removed spleen, a chipped tooth,
or even a case of malaria that just won't quit. These silly magazines
are there to sell the idea of adventure, plus lots of pricey gear and
pre-packaged tours.
Uh, hey Bicycling! Ignore these two. I have perfect skin and
teeth, hair, etc.; and am excruciatingly handsome. Lotso muscle,
tall, dark, mysterious but with a sensitive side.
Put me on your cover, and give me that Murlen tytanum bycicle.
