It has recently been brandished in front of my very nose the fact that
some of my Gentle Readers may not believe in the concept of the summer
doldrums. Gentle Reader, if you will, allow me to dispel that myth.

The almighty OED defines doldrums as low spirits, or a feeling of
boredom or depression. Such low spirits are quite relaiably reported by
many university graduates, who discover that their much-touted degree
counts for naught in a world that insists on only employing those with
experience. the sudden realisation that they are heavily in debt does
not generally help cure such doldrums, and the fact that such graduates
appear in drives in summer, quite clearly makes them summer doldrums.

Doldrums are also defined as an equatorial region noted for calm winds.
However, in the summer, the weather patterns shift northwards, and thus,
those previously summer doldrums shift into the area previously noted
for their high speed trade winds. Incautious sea captains of yore were
thereby caught in the summer doldrums. presumably, they were the ones
who had recently graduated.

Thank you for your contribution.

I enjoyed reading it as I sat in my unheated garage/office
freezing my bum off.
