In a shared folder I have many .xls files. On some the chart icon is
grayed out.On others it works normally. None of the help screens has
helped.

Probably those workbooks are shared, which means that lots of features
aren't available. For more information, look in Excel's Help, under
"Features that are unavailable in shared workbooks"

This is a reposting because in the first posting I did not clearly raise
the question.

In a shared folder I have numerous .xls files. In some the chart icon
is grayed out. In others it works normally. None of the help screens
has told me how to activate the grayed out icons when needed.

Thanks for taking time to comment, Jon, but I've seen no "Deb's
suggestion"

You're posting through excelForum, and it seems to lose many of the
messages. To see your original thread, and my response, you can search

Thank you Jon and Debra. Knowing that it was there somewhere to be
found I finally was able to find the correct helpscreen and follow the
directions.
