I also tried to open up another excel file over the
network and it gives the same error as well as SVCHOST.exe
keeps crashing the computer!
This is probably not a lot to go on, but can someone
please help me solve this annoying problem
thanks

I searched within the *excel* newsgroup for: "Cannot use object linking"
(I included the double quotes to make sure google saw it as a phrase.)
There were a bunch of hits. This one looked like it might help.
Either way, post back and google will keep track of it for the next person.

Had the same pb on some of our computers. As far as I'm concerned this pb is
more or less
connected to the W32.Blaster.Worm.
Here's what I did and up to now, this resolved the pb on all the computers
concerned :
1) Check if you have the virus MSBlast :
a) Check for msblast.exe processes in TaskManager
b) Check for msblast.exe in the system32 directory.
2) Get Fixblast.exe from Symantec and run it (kill msblast.exe processes
prior)
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.html
3) Get Security update from MS and install :
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp
4) Restart Windows and check for disabled elements in Excel and Word and
re-enable them
NB.: A couple of our computers did not have the virus but still presented
this pb. The security patch from MS corrected this pb anyway.
NB2.: Symantec recommends disabling SYSTEM RESTORE on XP and Windows ME
during scan to prevent the system restoring the virus.
Hope this helps some of you.
Bye.
