I was having a problem with Excel XP. When I wanted to use Solver, it
would display its dialog box and execute properly, but only once. After
that, I needed to restart Excel to use Solver again.

I used Google Groups to search for an answer, and I found that on 19
March 2002, Robert Williams posted this message to
microsoft.public.excel.misc:

> Using EXCEL in the latest (all patches applied) verion of
> OFFICE XP I'm having problems using the Solver function.
> Once I've used solver I can't use it again until I close
> my spreadsheet and reopen it. Again I can only use solver
> once before closing / reopening again. When clicking on
> Tools / Solver to use it a second time nothing happens,
> its like solver is not there. It gets a little annoying
> to have to close and reopen the spreadsheet to use the
> solver function.

However, no one was able to solve his problem -- there was no obvious
followup. I then found out that on 26 January 2002, Stuart Cole had
posted this message to microsoft.public.excel.setup:

> Solver Add-in will not run. The Installer program for
> Office XP and SR-1 both put the Library folder containing
> Solver.XLA in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10.
> It should be in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office.
> Both Office and Office10 are in the same sub-directory. I
> manually copied the Library directory to the Office
> sub-directory and solver now works properly.

When I followed this advice, it turned out to solve my Solver problem.
I am therefore posting these two messages together to ease the future
search task of anyone else experiencing this problem.
