Will particleboard hold screws ok? If not, is there any way to make it hold
screws better?

Found that by drilling a pilot hole first, the screws hold well.

Pre-drill and then add a drop of Titebond glue before setting the screw.
This has worked well for me.

Greetings and Salutations from the Dweller In the Citystate of the
Vincible Overlord!
Hear. Hear! I don't much care for particle board, and hardly like
MDF any more. However, one must, at times use them.
I should also point out that regular woodscrews do not work worth
crap in this stuff. They depend on having longish, wood fibers that
will compress slightly, and clamp the screw in place. Manufactured
materials don't do this well at all. So...use drywall type screws,
and remember that with manufactured materials, LONGER - not thicker -
is better.
With Drywall type screws, depending on the thickness of the board,
you may not need a pilot hole, but, it cannot hurt to drill one that
is slightly smaller than the root diameter of the screw you are using.
Good luck

I haven't heard anyone mention dedicated particle board screws yet. Most
drywall screws will snap under a load denser than drywall. You can order
deep thread particle board screws through mail-order or a specialty
fastener distributor in your area.
