I'm looking for a was to telnet into a device enter a few commands and
logout, while saving that telnet session to a txt file.

Then what you're looking for is called TeraTerm Pro
http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA002416/teraterm.html
Supports SSH too, if you require it.

Yep.

Unfortunately, the author of the app seems to have dropped out of sight
(no, I didn't see him when I was in South America, Ned <g>). The
licensing terms also state that you can't recompile the source code and
circulate a new version, so no one is trying to further develop or
refine the tool.

It's too bad, since that would have made a great core tool for WSH use.

Is there some kind of issue with using it though? It didn't sound like the
OP wanted to recompile or anything. I use it frequently on my NT boxen but
to be honest haven't needed it yet on anything Win2K or higher. I just
assumed since it's Win32 it would work on Win2K. The author's page is still
up and TTPro can still be downloaded from there.

Had to try ....
Works fine on My win2K box, and the SSH extension (from
http://www.zip.com.au/~roca/ttssh.html) too.
No support if the author's disappeared, but in my experience, the product
doesn't need support.
Sorry Alex you lost me on why this is a poor choice.

It's not a poor choice at all. It's just that with minor work it could
be turned into a great COM object, the shell could be cleaned up, and
the built-in macro scripting could be extended. But no one can
redistribute it in any way; you can make your own patches for it, but
the only way people can get legally get "improvements" if they can't be
written as a plugin is to have a C compiler and the original source.

Oh, OK I misunderstood what you were saying.
I agree though - this would make a *great* object - automating telnet's
almost a FAQ in this group.

"Almost"?

I've been thinking about taking the VB telnet that the OpenSSH for
Windows guy has and porting it to COM; it would be quite handy...

Apropos of my opinions of TeraTerm... if you check the user contribs on
the TextPad website, I'm the person who contributed syntax highlighting
support for TeraTerm macro files... :-)
