Opera's user interface is highly customisable. I thought it would be fun
to see how others have changed the default look of Opera, so I'm
encouraging you to post a link to a screenshot of how your Opera looks
in this thread.

Nice idea, Ernie. Mine is very different from yours... For my picture I
loaded the same Opera.com homepage as you did, in my default browsing mode
(meaning I left author CSS off, and some Proxomitron mods in place). If
other people show their Opera with the same page, we could also see how one
single page might be displayed in many ways...

If you "harvest" a lot of pictures, Opera might consider showing the
screenshots somewhere on their website, as real-use examples of Opera's

It looked a little familiar Rijk, you have the same button set and some
of the same panels as me. But you have the addressbar at the top. I
couldn't live with that ;)

How'd you get "those" 17 grey tabs on your bookmark list?
Also, I see about half a dozen underlined purplish tabs on the inner
portion of the booklist. I've never seen bookmarks like this before.

Maybe you have some kind of third party add on program to accomplish
these things.
Oh and one last thing that requires picking at your brain... how do you
use stylesheets to enhance active links. ;-)

Those are panels. You can find some panels of your own to add at
<url:http://my.opera.com/customize/>. Rijk has previously posted
links to panels available on this web site. See
<url:http://rijk.op.het.net/opera/docs/panels.html> for his panels
(and a cool example using IFRAME).

That's part of the CSS2 panel you can find at his page. It's
done via CSS, I believe. ;)

to change other colors, but not that.

I had already found the minimalist at

but they weren't all the same. I see though that the link
you posted is for 2.11, whereas I found 2.1, which I didn't
like as much.

Right click on your windows desktop, properties, the third tab ("look"?)...
It's not Opera, it's just a (very old) windows feature... You really didn't

Just save these two lines as a plain text file, and use it as User
Stylesheet, enabled in author mode:
a:active {border: 2px dashed yellow !important;}
a:visited {text-decoration: line-through !important;}

That's probably an old plugin association. PNGs display inline
for me. Most of the users have been sending images with higher
dimensions than yours, which accounts for more of the image size than
the file format used.

Hey Doug, you sound like the curious type; someone who likes fooling
around with things and judging for themselves. If you're up to it... I
suggest looking into this stuff:
- Partition Magic - Allows you to have up to three primary bootable
partitions (therefore you can have up to three independent operating
systems; great for trying out new operating systems without interfering
in any way shape or form with your present operating system)
- Windows 95B. Best 9x OS, if you don't use USB. It has Fat32 so it can
be used with large hard drives. Easy to install without Intercrap
Explorer.
Note - This is note the original version of Windows nor the upgrade
version. It came out in the fall of 1996, about a year after the original
version and was available only with new computers and not in stores. It's
also known as "Windows95 OSR2" and is the same as Win95C but without the
USB patch which can be downloaded separately to turn Win95B into Win95C.
- Windows98Lite. This is Win98 made to run as if it where Win95. It
tricks Intercrap Explorer right out of existence.

With Opera closed, edit the Opera6.ini file. Place an entry under:
[User Prefs]
I have the line:
Title=pera 6.01 - build 1041
You can place any desired text string after the "Title=".

The pin can be clicked to indicate that I want the window to be sticky -
that is, be on all desktops. Normally when you switch to a different
virtual desktop in X, program windows from a different desktop do not
follow, but if the windows are sticky then they will be on every virtual
desktop.
It's no extra tool, but a native feature of X and the window-manager.

don't think it's a good idea to link to the original locations of the
pictures, since a lot of users will probalby want to remove them after
some time.
I suppose I could volunteer to host all screenshots. I have lots of
server space that I don't use, and after all, I'm the one who started it
all.

That would be a great thing.. Maybe add an option for people to upload new
screenshots. Could turn into a pretty nice gallery over time.
If for some reason you deside not to do that after all, let me know and I'll
probably put up a page somewhere instead.
One other thing: I noticed that you put a note beside the screenshot from
Peter Karlsson noting that the screenshot was from a Linux box. If you want
to keep track of the OS's then you should add the "Linux" label to mine as
well :)

Well, what I meant was that I would be willing to host the files so that
Brett could link to them instead of all the different, temporary
locations. That is, if he doesn't have sufficient space to host them
himself.
I wasn't thinking of setting up a whole gallery, but actually that is a
good idea. I don't have much time though, so if you would like to do it,
be my guest.

Well, I finally figured out I need to enable the Opera email client to post followups with Opera. (duh)
Here's mine. No background b\c I change the system colors too often. :-)

I could do it :). I have a lot of time on my hands, so I'll be
working on it when I get bored... someone might want to mirror my page
though as my host is only Geocities.

Space is not an issue, but bandwidth is. Look at your logs and then
do the math. File sizes like that add up in a big hurry. I suppose
we could optimize the graphics a bit and get them down in the 50-70k
area, but I feel that would change the whole point of the excersize.
As the urls go stale in a few weeks, I'll remove the page. I didn't
mean it as a long term thing...

The only way I could get mine fixed was to delete every occurence of
"Netscape" in the opera6.ini.
If you are the adventurous type:
- make a copy of your Opera6.ini for backup purposes.
- load your Opera6.ini up in a text editor.
- delete everyline you find with the word "netscape" in it.
- rename your netscape directory.
- start and then close Opera.
- rename your netscape directory back to netscape.
- done.
That will probably zap a few obscure Netscape plugins support, but
it will single handily cure dozens of problems.
The majority of config problems I've run into with Opera in the last
two years have been related to this issue.
tip: when installing new versions of Opera, temporarily rename your
Netscape directory to something else - don't let Opera find it.
I understand it Opera, but there should be a prompt on the install,
"use existing netscape plugins?" It screws up associations EVERY
time.

Hehehe, by adding "127.0.0.1 The-Matrix" to my hosts file I was able to get Opera to recognize Proxomitron as the The-Matrix. :) It's a tip I learned
from the Proxomitron Yahoo Group. :)

Yes, that is the normal number of open windows. It takes quite a few
seconds to minimize/maximize all -- something I do rather often -- and
it's no fun at all to start up Opera after a crash and wait for all of
them to load. I *really* wish Opera 6 was as stable as 5.12. =/
