Maybe you *shouldn't* upgrade your Bose X headset...

I've written about how cool it is that Bose offers a free
upgrade to the Bose X. Well, I need to backpeddle a little
bit.

My wife and I have Bose X headsets. We've been thrilled
with them for years. Her only complaint was solved by me
putting a patch of sheepskin under the band. (That's one
of the upgrades from Bose now.)

When we were at Oshkosh, we learned of a free upgrade so
she sent her set in. She also picked up a pair of lighter
weight Sennheisers. They weren't as good at reducing noise
but they worked while her Bose set was in transit.

When her set returned, we discovered that it had a terrible
"whooshing" problem. I didn't believe her at first, but on
one of my flights to California I left my headset to be
upgraded and took hers. Fortunately I had engine problems
and ended up turning back. The noise in the headset was
*really* annoying.

She called in the problem to Bose. They immediately
recognized it and she was told to return the set. When she
got them back, it was awhile before she used them (because
of our travels), but on our trip back from California
recently she had plenty of time to test them against her
Sennheisers and my Bose X. They're not good.

She called Bose again today. The response wasn't so great.
We can send them back, but there are no guarantees that
they're ever going to work as well as my (not upgraded)
pair. She got an earful from the person who tests the
headsets about how they were perfect when they left the
factory and it must be a problem on our end - maybe she's
just imagining that they're not as good? (I wonder if he's
the same one who checked them the first time?)

It's not over yet, but since I've recommended the upgrade I
wanted everyone to know of the risk involved. I'll post
updates.

I have another experience with the Bose X headset. I have used the original
Bose headset in my homebuilt MustangII since about 1993 and have liked them.
When the Bose X model came out, (even) after reading the comments about this
model in Aviation Consumer, I purchased one with the agreement that if I
didn't like it, a full refund would be made. This is exactly what occurred,
that is a full refund. The headset was only as good at altitude as my old
ones, but on takeoff it was just awful noisy. Aviation Consumer attributes
the takeoff noise to reverberations with the engine and runway causing
frequencies that the Bose can't handle. I still use my Bose originals, but
if and when these break and are not repairable, I will go with some other
brand. I have not been impressed with Bose aviation reps the last few times
I have talked with them.
