You'll need to modify the "edit" action for the "Microsoft Internet Document 5.0" file type.
1) Open Windows Explorer, and choose View | Folder Options | File Types tab.
2) Scroll down to and select Microsoft Internet Document 5.0. Click the Edit button.
3) Select the edit action (if there isn't one, make one!), and click the new Edit button.
4) Now type the command line for your favorite HTML editing program.
5) Go through all the OKs and restart IE.

You can in fact change the "View Source" editor but unfortunately that KB
Q163606
does not really give the answer. The tips below do not apply to IE4 and
there are some limitations... A registry setting is noted in this tech
article... (link will need to be reglued)
http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/browser/configuration/ClientReg
/ClientRegistryLayout.asp
At the top is a note about some editor limits (editor must be able to
use long file names) -- at the bottom of that document is a section with
this
registry entry:
HKLM\...\View Source Editor\Editor Name
fyi... EditPad (Postcard ware from Jan Goyvaerts) works fine on my IE5
system
