Looking at the RFC 2060 it seems it does not cater for searching
subfolders.

Any extensions or servers that support this? (I am using Cyrus). I
would not like it left up to the client to implement.

It seems like rather a gross oversight. I mean its very common that i
want to search my entire message store for a certain email that I've
misplaced.

A command that invoked a server side equivalent to egrep would certainly
rock! But how would it return the results?

As far as I know there are no documented extensions like that. The UW-IMAP
server advertizes an extension called "SCAN", which appears to do that;
however it appears to be a private server extension, a brief net search
shows that its publication was withdrawn, so as of now it is only a private
server extension only, and as far as I know only pine knows how to use it.

I know you specified Cyrus. In UW it took compiling in the directory name
to be searched into the IMAP binary.
