This may be off-topic but I thought I would post it here because of the
recommendations I've seen in this newsgroup wrt Sony CD Extreme. I
downloaded it and want to try it out......but.......should I uninstall Roxio
(Adaptec) Easy CD Creator Platinium first? Does anyone with experience with
these programs know of any potential conflicts from having both installed on
the same computer at the same time?
TIA

CD Extreme (along with RecordnowMax, Prassi primo plus) are about the best
burning software out there. None of them even conflict with Nero
(Impossible, I hear you say) So I don`t think you will have any problems.
However, once you have tried CD Extreme, or the others mentioned -( they are
exactly the same software with a slightly different flavour ) I don`t think
you will want any other on your system.
Hope this Helps.

I've tried installing Sony CD Extreme next to my Easy CD (v3.5c) and it
worked fine, but I don't think I've tried to run Easy CD as well. I suspect
they can be installed simultaneously (in spite of the bad rep Easy CD has in
this respect).

Greetings, Peter Passchier
I know this is clearly OT, but several people here are familiar with
Easy CD and issues with it.
I will have to start saving files to a CD. Having a slow P166 computer,
small HD and DUN, I don't want to D/L the Sony free program if not
necessary.
I have Easy CD 4 and 5. I have not yet installed in W98SE. My only need
is to save files to a CD, and maybe HD image later.
Is either version 4 or 5 preferable?
What are the typical problems?
Thanks,
Mike Sa
> Is either version 4 or 5 preferable?
I think that 4 will fit your system better since it's less bloated.
There's also the fact that all I've heard about 5 has been negative
comments.
> What are the typical problems?
A toasted system (worst case scenario). I'm not sure if that was a
Windows 2000 (and XP?) problem only though.

Thanks, rhexis.
That's the info I needed. "Less bloated" is good news.

> Is either version 4 or 5 preferable?
I'm using EasyCD 4.03 on WIN98SE. EasyCD 5 is a useless piece of bloatware
junk best avoided.
> What are the typical problems?
None, unless you happen to install and then uninstall Homesite, in which
case Easy CD won't work at all until you reinstall Homesite.

Personally, I prefer 3.5c. Never had any problem with any version though,
currently have 5.1. The problems generally arise, IMO, because of DirectCD
and the failure of people to understand its function, the way it works and
the fact that it is a separate program that need not even be installed.
That said, CD Extreme has several advantages...
1. "Burn proof technology". No idea if EZCD has same
2. Long file names are OK - about twice the normal length
3. Installed size is about 5 megs. Full install of EZCD 5 Platinum is
around 55 megs. In all fairness, EZCD itself is about the same size as
CDExtreme but DirectCD and other goodies bump it way up if you install
them.
My preferance is for CDExtreme and ultimately it will be the only one
living on my box.
dadiOH
Thanks, dadiOH.
What is the installed size of CDExtreme? If 5 MB, my HD will handle it,
but if 55 MB, N/A.

CD Extreme is available in 3 parts, which can be *LEGALLY* obtained for free
from Sony and Veritas. Check Son of Spys website.

Easy CD and Nero can be *ILLEGALLY* obtained for free from warez sites.
Huge difference.
Brian
Your best bet would be to D/L it directly from the Sony Website. The
only problem you may have is if the software is older than your
burner, in which case the proggy won`t recognise it. This can be cured
by D/L`ing the latest set of ASPI drivers available from the adaptec
website

Downloading Daddy, contacted Sony and asked if "Sony CD Extreame" was
in fact freeware and was informed that it wasn't. (see the original
posting below).
Therefore, your statement that it can be obtained *LEGALLY* from Sony
is incorrect. In fact once I read Downloading Daddy's posting I
removed the software from my machine.

I have seen the queastion as to whether or not sony cd extreme is
freeware
or not posted many times in this newsgroup and I have never felt that
there
had been a concrete answer so I took it upon myself to ask sony, here
is
thier response:
Dear Sir,
I'm sorry, but Sony's version of CD Extreme, is not freeware.
Sony does
not write the CD Extreme software, we only bundle it with some of our
drives. For that reason, we are not authorized to post full versions
of the
software for download.
Please include previous e-mails in any replies so we may better assist
you.
Also, you may wish to visit our new website at
www.sony.com/storagesupport .
This website has many FAQ's, a technical assistant (step by step
processes),
downloads, and an e-mail form to contact us.
Thank you,

Had a look at the site and can't find anything to say that the
software is freeware. http://www.sony.co.th/servicesupport.
As for the Ginny the Sony Technical Support person, I can't see
anywhere in her reply to Downloading Daddy where she states she speaks
for the entire multinational megacorporation of Sony worldwide, she
just answered as a Sony representative.
Even though I installed and used this software for quite sometime, I
always had this little niggle that suspected that the software wasn't
freeware. That is why I uninstalled the software after reading the
reply from Sony support person to Downloading Daddy.

CD Extreme is not freeware. If anything it more closely meets the definition
of orphanware even though it is still on the Sony site and downloadable for
free. If one is a purist (I am not implying that there is anything wrong
with that) then one should not use orphanware as it is not freeware.

For WAV files, I'd need a lot of convincing as to how it couold be
different (bits are bits, and if recorded and read accurately, should
be the same)
But for MP3, the choice of decoder can make a difference, particulatly
if the encoder used is LAME at full options, as it can plough areas
that others don't.
If you have space, expand to WAV using a competent decoder - WINLAME,
using "MAD", or any program that uses a Franhofer decoder.
Try FEURIO (nagware) - as that has an internal Fraunhofer decode and
can write on the fly - or EAC - if you insist on full
free(postcard)ware - I believe it may use the MPGLIB decompression
from LAME

I'm hardly a purist Harry, I use Ad-Aware, ZoneAlarm, and Mailwasher
daily and used FreeAgent and PowerDesk for quite awhile before getting
the full versions.
I have no problem with posters giving information in regards
crippleware, lite versions, or magazine CD's or any of the other
variations of software that can be downloaded or had from magazine
CD's.
However, I feel that Sony CD Extreame doesn't come within *my*
definition of freeware, even in the most liberal sense of the word. As
far as I'm concerned Sony CD Extreame is commercial software for
owners of Sony drives which can still be updated by using the Prassi
update on the Veritas site. (See below)

This doesn't sound like the software is orphanware, or been abandoned,
or being giving away for free in my opinion.
However, if anyone can prove that Sony CD Extreame is free to use for
everyone, regardless of the drive used, and give the details where
this information can be accessed, I will gladly download and use
again.
In the mean time I will still continue to classify Sony CD Extreame as
commercial software.
