My husband and I are planning a trip to Club Solaris in Cancun. I had never
heard of the resort until I started reading this newsgroup and all the good
things you folks has to say about it. My husband and I are in our mid 30's and
are looking for a nice beach resort to get away where we can just relax, wear
shorts all day and night, including dinner time. We were looking into Sandals,
beaches, etc, but I think we've chosen the Club Solaris, but we have some new
questions that haven't been posted before. Does anyone know how late the pools
and jacuzzis stay open? We don't speak Spanish at all, will that be a problem
at the resort?
My husband and I love to snorkel, are you able to do this from their beach and
can you swim safely at their beach. Is it humid there, do I need to bring
mosquito repellant? Any info anyone can give us is greaatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Karen

Karen,

All resorts in Cancun are well tuned to American tourists. You will find that the
staff at most Mexican beach resorts not only understand US style English but are
able to communicate in Italian, German, French as well as many different Latin
American dialects of Spanish. Kind of embarrassing when the housekeeping staff
know more languages than you do.

Cancun is so Americanized some folks refer to it as Miami Beach South. You will
find a Wal-mart, Hooters, Planet Hollywood, and even a Taco Bell in the tourist
zone of Cancun.

You can snorkel right off the beach but you most likely won't see very much - just
some eel grass. For Scuba / snorkeling you may want to investigate a day trip to
either Cozumel, Xcaret or Xel-ha. You can obtain information about excursions at
your hotel or at the Embarcadero.

I haven't stayed at your hotel so I cannot comment about pool or hot tub hours. You
should be able to obtain this information from (the hotel web site by e-mailing
them or dialing their toll free number), your travel agent or tour operator.

Generally at most resorts the dress is casual. There are usually some pool side
snack bar where bathing suits are ok. The main dining room is usually shirts,
shorts and sandals. Special restaurants which require reservations usually call
for more dressy attire.

It's been awhile since I stayed there, but it seems they closed around
sundown.

No, most of the staff speak enough English that you can get by.

The snorkeling at this resort is most useless although swimming is
fine. But a short walk down the beach is Club Med which has a very
good snorkeling of the south side of the resort. By the way, all
Mexican beaches are public, so no problem going to another resort's
beach area.

It is very humid, and repellent is a good idea.
