Does anyone know of a program for a networked PC similar to the Unix cron?

I would like to set up a dedicated pc (xt) to run some batch or exe files at
specified times. ( 2:00am etc).

This would do user file area cleanup, incremental backups, change system
notice files etc. All of these functions should be done before people start
using the system for the day.

LANBatch version 2.0 is out.
They plan to release another version (2.?) very soon.
~$550 US for one server .

Typical usage for the user is "batch sh -c \"myjob.ksh\" , "batch purge all",
things like that.
I'm fairly satisfied with it.

All jobs run as user BATCH because there is no "setuid" bit/concept in Novell.

The installation of LANBATCH is somewhat inflexible because the home
for the user BATCH must be in sys:/batch, period.
Our users would preferably be in home:/logname (like the Sun systems.
We prefer uniform administration and pick the Unix model verses the Novell
non-model. )

If you are using windows, there is a 'cron' program available by
ftp from cica.cica.indiana.edu (in /pub/pc/win3). I believe it is a
shareware program. I only tried it once so I can't really tell you
anything more than I know it exists in windows,( perhaps that can call a
dos session batch file to do the work you want?)

Our sloution to this problem is/was to run MS Winblows on a workstation
(in our case the one w/tape drive). Then install Norton Desktop for
winblows. Norton has a Task Scheduler that runs as a background task.
Ours backus up the network at 8pm daily. However you can run any thing
from this.

Questions? Just ask.

This probably won't work for you. Nortons (NDW) utilities mostly run in ONLY
enhanced or standard modes. As mentioned above the configuration
is and XT.

Gary Croker.

P.s Just to save you from buying it, installing it, and finding it don't work.

There was a program called LANBatch, which I believe is now marketed by
Brightworks as PS-Batch. It allows you to make a machine a dedicated
'batch' processor. We bought it when it first came out to use for remote
printing (in the bad old days, before PS-Print, LANSpool, and such), and
then used it for a variety of tasks. You can send jobs to run on it now,
to run at a scheduled date/time, or to run daily at a scheduled time.

I use a (shareware?) program called CRONJR that runs on a dedicated station.
An XT is fine. It's quite cron-like, with only a few irritating features.
I pulled it down from Compu$erve.
