I want to install critical updates on a new computer with WinXP Home before
connecting it to the Internet. I downloaded the updates with Windows Update
Catalog and burned them to a CD-R with another computer. I copied the
downloaded folders and files to the hard disk of the new computer.

A couple of questions about the next step:

1. Do I simply install each update, in any order, by executing the exe
files -- or do I have to use some kind of installer program?

2. What will happen if some or all of the updates are not really needed? (I
don't know the update level of the new OS.)

I read Knowledge Base Article 323166 but did not find answers.

Thanks in advance, Robert

Thanks for the response. I read the entire guide, but found it very
confusing. For instance, it refers often to a program "Update.exe", but
there is no such program or file on any of my machines (searched all files
including hidden and system). I am not a systems administrator needing to
install updates to multiple systems over a network. I just want to how to
install updates to one computer before it is connected to the Internet.

Please read my original posting (below). I would be very grateful for a
clear, simple answer.

Thanks again, Robert

You just run the exe files...

This is how I would do it:

1)
Start with installing SP1 if it not installed already and then reboot.

Service Pack 1 for WinXP can you find under Network Installation here
(a 134 MB download, same file for Pro and Home):
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp

2)
Then I would have installed this one and rebooted:

Update Rollup 1 for Windows XP Is Available
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=826939

The Update Rollup for XP contains 22 updates for Windows XP released
after SP1 in one package (do not download the express-installation version if
you want to do a off-line install!).

3)
Then you should at least install these OS security updates released after
"Update Rollup 1", you can install them together, and then do a reboot.

KB823182: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-041.asp
KB828035: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-043.asp
KB825119 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-044.asp

4)
Then I would install the Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer
and done a reboot (I prefer to not install IE updates together with other
updates because you can end up with not the newest version of some system files
in worst case).

KB824145 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-048.asp

5)
Then you would look into if you need any other security updates on other
components, e.g. Media Player,Windows Messenger, IIS etc.

The updates will check the environment and refuse to install if they see that
the update level required isn't in place.

Update.exe is packaged inside the updates themselves and extracted at installation
time (and then deleted after the installation is finished). Most updates uses
update.exe, but some do not. E.g. IE and MDAC updates do not use update.exe.

See my other post to you.

Thank you so much, Torgeir. That is exactly the help I was hoping for.

Best regards, Robert
