Regarding a Windows 2000 Professional machine. First I
will go though the obvious. There is only one entry in
the host file (besides localhost) and it's for another
machine on the LAN. The hostname and IP address in the
hosts file is correct. The hosts file is in
c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc like it's supposed to be. I
opened the hosts file in notepad from that directory and
saved it in that directory (refering to a specific
microsoft fix). I've tried flushing the DNS cache. I've
tried removing all reference to DNS servers, thinking this
would force the W2K machine to use the hosts file only,
this doesn't work. It doesn't matter what I have in the
hosts file, all I ever get is "unknown host" messages when
I try to ping hostnames that are in the hosts file. I've
been searching all over the Internet and Microsofts
Knowledge base's, and have not found one thing that
describes my problem. I would also like to note that my
host file did work at one time and seems to have stopped
working this last go around with Microsoft Update. Could
this problem have something to do with the latest
Microsoft patches for W2K I wonder? At any rate,
hopefully some of you have encountered this issue before,
if so, please share in your experiance or remedy.

Thanks
Curtis.

Hi Curtis,

Did you check to make sure the DNS client is running?

I'm having the same trouble on an XP client. What's
wierd is I can ping all the pcs in the network
neighborhood, except for a SCO Unix server, that doesn't
appear in the neighborhood. It appears on the other
clients and there is a host file on the XP client that
references that Unix server. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mia

CP> The hosts file is in
CP> c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc like it's supposed to be.

But is that where your machine is currently looking for it ?
Check the value of the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DataBasePath
registry key.
