The download manager is a nice little feature - but having it
completely replace the regular download progress dialogue is awful
(especially with no UI option to change the behaviour back to what it
was before...)
I'm all for changing around default settings to get feedback and bug
testing on features, but a change this dramatic should have a UI option
for putting it back to where it was.

I disagree. The UI designer has the right and responsibility to make
decisions in this regard rather than dumping preferences on users. Does
the download manager provide the same functionality as the previous
behavior? yes. Does it provide more? yes. What's your problem with it?
My guess is that it takes up too much of your desktop area or you want
to see how much of each file is downloaded by only looking at your
taskbar. You'll get used to it unless, of course, you decide to care
about it and then you'll hate it eternally. The end users probably won't
care one way or the other if a decent set of preferences for the DL
manager are used (like only keeping downloads of the last ten files).
The preferences panel does need to be enabled, but it needs to be like
the MacIE one and does not need the option to go to the old behavior,
that's how we have this complex UI to begin with.

If you don't like it, then change it:

user_pref("browser.downloadmanager.behavior", x);

Where x = a value of 0,1,2

0 = Download Manager (new)
1 = Download Manager (old)
2 = No download manager GUI or progress indication

If the value is set to " 2 " there is no indication of download progress
or options. The file is actually downloaded and you're "on your own" as
to the progress and finish time(s), etc

Add this pref to your user.js file.

In the future it would be 'nice' to just ask without all the whining
rhetoric. There is usually a sensible solution to a sensible question. ;-)

I actually already knew how to fix it and did - however, my complaint
was with the UI for deciding which method to use being removed

The UI was there and working, and it was removed for no justifiable
reason that I can detect. I wasn't whining - I was bitching and moaning.

lol... I'm a big fan of this project, and I'm not going to pull a JTK
and scream about how you're killing this project that's already dead by
not including that UI... Seeing as it's not dead, it's growing into a
popular end user product (as compared to a year ago... ) even though
it's not supposed to, and the quality and polish level is getting
excellent. I just happen to think that at least for the moment, that UI
is important. Merely an opinion :)
