S/E ASIA'S GREATEST RACE GETS EVEN BETTER ...
The Laguna Phuket Triathlon is a joint venture between Asia's
first integrated resort development, Laguna Phuket and sports
giant, International Management Group (IMG). As the world's
largest sports management and marketing group, IMG operates a
multitude of events ranging from the Johnnie Walker Classic to
the Chinese Football league.
Laguna Phuket Triathlon has always boasted a strong field of
international Pros. This year we will go one better and host a
round of the International Triathlon Grand Prix (ITGP) Series
which will showcase 20 of the top women triathletes in the world.
The women's ITGP will be run as part of the Thai Airways
International Laguna Phuket Triathlon. It will feature
US$70,000 in prize money and the field will include Paula
Newby-Fraser, Wendy Ingraham and more. The race length has been
changed to the official Olympic distance to help promote Olympic
participation from Asian Triathletes
There will be a separate men's ITGP race which will start at
4:00 p.m. and will be your chance to see the 20 best male
triathletes in the world go head to head in a series of exciting
short course races. Be there when Pigg, Welch, Allen, Bevan,
Lessing, Smith and 20 top international racers compete for their
share of US$100,000. (Please note this race is not included in
the Laguna Phuket package and is Pro invitees only)
The Venue
The Laguna Phuket Triathlon will take place almost entirely on
the land surrounding the magnificent Laguna Phuket resort. The
cycling element of the event will begin in the resort and will
venture out on to the scenic roads of Phuket Island.
RACE COURSE
Swim - A unique 1500m swim comprising 2 bodies of water.
Starting in the Andaman Sea in front of the Sheraton Grande
Laguna Beach and finishing in a lagoon at Laguna Beach Club.
Bike - A fast, flat 40k course that takes competitors past local
villages, rice paddies and rubber plantations before returning
to the transition area at Laguna Beach Club.
Run - A flat 10k run through Laguna Phuket resort and
surrounding roads finishing at Banyan Tree Phuket.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
The Laguna Phuket Triathlon will be held on Saturday, October
12th 1996 at 8.00 am.
A variety of social events will be held in conjunction with the
Laguna Phuket Triathlon:
Friday - Pasta Night
Saturday - Awards Dinner
TRIATHLON FIELD
In addition to world class triathletes, the Laguna Phuket
Triathlon is positioned to attract participants from all over
the globe.
TELEVISION
Television for the Laguna Phuket Triathlon will be produced
under the auspices of Trans World International (TWI), the
world's largest producer and distributor of sports programming.
TWI is the television arm of International Management Group.
Star TV has already committed to air the Triathlon's hour
highlights program on three occasions. Similarly, the Prime
Network in the United States and Euro Sport have agreed to air
the event. The Laguna Phuket Triathlon will also be featured on
Trans World Sport, the world's most highly viewed weekly
anthology with a reach of 150 million households.
Channel Seven, Thailand's leading television station will give
the event significant coverage (one hour show) with guaranteed
promotional support/airtime in the lead up to the event. Seven
will also form part of the production team.
