getting "incorrect tape volume" on install...

QIC tape in internal Archive drive, as I've done before. N1 diskette
wouldn't boot. I remembered a post here about the newer images for
those 3 diskettes that I had previously d'loaded from SCO's FTP site.
I created the new images using rawrite and the 3 images for version
3.2 v4.y, as described in the file list.
I can start the install, see the tape, and even watch/hear the tape
rewind, but once it accesses the tape I get a failed install, showing:
rewinding tape...
Error: Incorrect tape volume in drive
I've tried both a copy of the tape and the original (don't really want
to use that original much), but they fail in the same way listed
above.
This is my 1st attempt with these new image files, so I have no
history with these updated images. Could it be that something is
wrong with them? Or have I misunderstood that ms101.35.n1.Z and
ms101.35.n2.Z and ms101.35.m1.Z are the proper zipped files for the
3.2v4.2 install disks?
TIA for thoughts/info on getting this install to use the QIC tape.

ms101 is Maintenance Supplement MSv4.1, which is older than 3.2v4.2.
According to http://www.pcunix.com/SCOFAQ/FAQ_downloadboot.html, you can
probably use one of:
ftp://stage.caldera.com/SLS/uod383bun1.Z
ftp://stage.caldera.com/SLS/uod429a.Z
Download both, make images of both, try 429 first.

Thanks, Bela. And thanks to a post here from Robert Side to me a few
months ago, I d'loaded the uod429a.Z and dropped it to diskette.
However, it sill errors out "incorrect tape volume", with either tape.
(the label *does* say 4.2v4.2)
I'm only trying the new images 'cos my old N1 is dead - bad block(s)
reported, so I tried uod429a.
I guess I'll now try the uod383bun1.Z, to see if that'll work. I
can't believe neither works. I may have to try booting another
version somewhere, adding the tape drive, then finding the original
images to drop onto floppies.

I'll archive those - no good to me, at present. Is there another
place to get the original images for 4.2 on the SCO/Caldera site now?

I hope you mean "3.2v4.2".
Back then we had a different tape for every possible combination; in
particular, an ODT tape was very different from a Unix tape. I'm not
sure whether they can be used with interchangable boot disks, or whether
the boot disk is directly tied to the tape.

I'm not sure there _are_ images of those floppies on the correspondign
tape. We didn't get that clue until we moved completely to CDs, which
have more space and don't force you to read everything on the media.

MSv4.2 is at ftp://stage.caldera.com/Supplements/msv42/. It won't help
you because it's just an installable supplement, it has no full boot
disk. (Its first disk is a boot-only disk -- it will get you as far as
the "Boot:" prompt, at which point you have to swap in a full boot disk.
Actually, that _might_ help you if the only bad sectors on your original
boot disk were in the early going -- might as well give it a try.)

I have a N1 disk for 3.2v4.2 (3 1/2"), I can make a copy and mail it
to you if you like.

Even that might not be specific enough. For some releases, we shipped
different N1 images for each of these:
SCO Unix standalone distributed on floppies
SCO Unix standalone distributed on tape
SCO Unix standalone distributed on CD-ROM
Open Desktop distributed on floppies
Open Desktop distributed on tape
Open Desktop distributed on CD-ROM
The two of you should compare part numbers and/or labels (in full
detail) printed on the disks, make sure they're really the same. Thom
says "3.2v4.2" but I'm not sure whether he's stated whether it's
standalone Unix or ODT.

can't get it to boot properly, for some reason. (no problem with the
others I created, just can't get this one done)
You're right, the version is 3.2v4.2 - my typo. Tape reads:

if that helps. I'll check the license, and return with that info if
it's somehow different.
I can't find my original disk yet, but this is a tape install of UNIX,
I believe, that can use either 1 or 3 disks to install. It came with
1, but I've been able to use the 3-disk install and switch to tape, if
memory serves.
I'll try the other bootable disk you mentioned. As you say, it's
worth a try. Too bad the tape didn't carry boot images, but if I get
time I'll try to take a good look.

Dear Thom,
Altos SCO Unix used to come on 1 tape, but with multiple file marks.
Don't know if SCO did this.
If your boot disk isn't compatible with the tape, I wonder if it might
work if you advanced the tape, trial and error, to subsequent file marks.
