There will be some changes within the organization of the news-service
known as "News.CIS.DFN.DE" and operated by the computer center of Freie
Universitaet Berlin, Germany.
The computer center of Freie Universitaet Berlin (ZEDAT) has taken over
the task of supplying a central news-service for member organizations
of the German National Research and Education Network (DFN). As a
result of this, the well-known name "News.CIS.DFN.DE" will be used
exclusively in connection with this new service (DFNNetNews) from now
on.
Individually registered users that do not take part in DFNNetNews will
continue to have access to the service using two new names:
- News.Individual.NET (for international users)
- News.Individual.DE (for German-speaking users)
Announcements that concern this service will be tagged with
"[Individual]" in the subject line.
The change of name concerns both the name of the news-server itself and
the URLs that point to the web-space connected with the service:
http://news.individual.net/
http://news.individual.de/
As the service provided is identical for both servers, it is neither
necessary nor possible to register for both.
Note:
=====
Existing configurations will continue to work without the need for
modification because the technical separation of services will take
place internally on the server-side.
We do ask you to follow the new installation guides available via
http://news.individual.net/ for future setups though. Please make a
special note of the new e-mail addresses for registration:
news-r...@individual.net (international users)
news-r...@individual.de (German-speaking users)

Yes...

For the time being: yes.

At some point in the future you should use news.individual.net instead of
news.cis.dfn.de. Your user/password should work on this server.

as kids, we'd all run around in a darkened room munching pills and

Someone must pay for the service that is provided by news.cis.dfn.de The
concept who pays for what has changed. So from now on the server
news.cis.dfn.de is the server that should be used by the members of dfn
who pay for it. All private users who don't pay for it should use
news.individual.net.
At the moment both names point to the same newsserver an have the same
userdatabase and have the same admins, but from now on that could change
every day.
You should change to news.individual.net now (or the next few days). If
the servers are the same it doesn't matter and if there will be a change
you don't get errormessages.

And for Message-IDs should I now use ID-92747.user.individual.net instead of
ID-92747.user.dfncis.de?
Oh, and while I've got your attention, earlier this year I asked about
adding a hierarchy (actually only two groups), melb.*. In particular, I want
the group melb.general. Vera said something about not adding new hierarchies
at that time. Can it be done now?

You should use "uni-berlin" instead of "dfncis" according to the FAQ.

No. You should use ID-92747.user.uni-berlin.de

With 'my attention' you've only got the attention of another user. I'm
not related with the administration of the server. It' just, that in
de.comm.provider.usenet these questions have already been answered.

I don't know. Just ask Vera again.
