The US Navy will fly a fluidic flight control backup system on an
F-18. A hydraulic computer is the only one both fast enough to control
an aircraft, and totally immune to electro-magnetic interference.
There are plans to use this now, this is to prove that it works,
and have it ready when an electro-magnetic threat emerges.
(Hydraulic computers is nothing new. They compare favourable with
vacuum tubes as to speed, size and power consumption. -UF)

The South African Air Force is likely to get Russian engines on
its Mirage F.1s. Last April an airframe was shipped to Soviet,
and two engines to South Africa. At 50 kN dry, 82 kN with reheat,
the Klimov RD-33 is about 10% more powerful than the Atar 9K50.

The third aircraft carrier beeing built for the Soviet Navy, the
nuclear powered Ulyanovsk, will be sold as scrap, as will all
ships in Ukraina less than 50% complete. The second, Varyag, is
about 60% complete.

Air bags will be fitted to some AH-1 Cobra helicopters. They are
similar to those used in cars, but the sensor operates in all
directions. Maybe Black Hawks and Apaches will get some too.
