I'm getting some flaky results with this.
I did an upgrade install on my tablet PC. Worked fine, but took away
my desktop icon (convenient for changing account properties or setting
up new profiles, since I'm also the exchange admin for my company -
much easier using this than having to go through to control panel /
mail applet). Rebuilt the tablet from scratch, installed Office 2003
clean, no prior office version. No desktop icon. Installed on a
Windows 2000 server as a clean install - had a desktop icon. Rebuilt
that server, did another clean install just like prior time, no
desktop icon. Installed on the download I have for 2003 server from
my MSDN account that I just set up today. No desktop icon.

I would've thought it was disabled, except for the fact that on that
one clean install it put the icon to the desktop, and had the right
click profile setting availability again.

I assume I can dig up some registry hack or something to re-create the
icon if I search through either support.microsoft.com or
www.jsiinc.com but I was wondering if anyone else has had the
inconsistent icon behavior?

Anyone have a link to save me the searching to get the icon back on
the desktop? <G>

Thanks for any info.

Last I heard from Microsoft is that the desktop icon is gone to meet XP logo
certification. I would guess that Windows Server 2003 will have the same
criteria while Windows 2000 does not.

REGEDIT4

256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SUMMARY
If the Outlook icon has been removed from your desktop, you can
restore it by editing the Windows registry.
MORE INFORMATION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system.
Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result
from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your
own risk.

To restore the Outlook icon to your desktop, remove the registry value
that prevents the Windows Installer from re-installing the Outlook
icon. To do this:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate the registry value to delete:

On Windows 98, find the registry value DesktopShortcutAsIs under the
following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Setup

On Windows 2000, find the registry value W2kDesktopShortcutAsIs under
the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Setup

Click the value, and then press DELETE.
On the Registry menu, click Exit.
Click Start, point to Run, and type:
<drive:>\setup.exe ADDLOCAL="OUTLOOKNonBootFiles"

(where <drive:> is the letter of your CD-ROM drive or network share
path)
Click OK.
The Windows Installer runs and installs the Outlook icon after Outlook
starts. The Windows Installer may prompt you for your installation
CD-ROM if the Office/Outlook CD is not in the drive.
