FAQ about service pack installs

Based on feedback and questions received today we are going to make the
following additions to the SUS FAQ tomorrow, but I wanted to post them here
for reference.

Q. How do the new service packs install?

A. The service packs use a command line switch to install in quiet mode so
there is no user interaction needed. They also use a command line switch to
create backup files so that they can be uninstalled, if necessary.

Q. I run out of disk space attempting to synchronize my SUS server

A. With only one language selected, the disk space required to save the
updates locally has gone from approximately 300Mb to 600Mb. If you run out
of disk space, it is likely that you are syncing more than one language. In
the SUS Admin page, click on Set Options in the left navigation page, and
then check locales that you are synchronizing content for. If you are
synchronizing more languages than you want, you will need to do the
following:

a.. Click the "Clear All" button
b.. Click the check-box next to only the languages you need to distribute
to clients
c.. Click the "Apply" button
d.. Navigate to the \SUS\Content\Cabs folder on your harddrive
e.. Delete all content in that folder
f.. Synchronize your SUS server. This will pull down only content for the
languages that you have selected now.

Q. When installing a service pack manually the Automatic Updates UI hangs.

A. The Automatic Updates UI probably isn't hanging, but is waiting for the
service pack install to complete. There is no animation to indicate that
the install is still continuing though, and you don't receive feedback about
the install completing until it is done, especially since the install of
service packs is done in quiet mode with no UI from the service pack
installer. The service pack install can take several minutes, especially on
slower hardware, so the best option is to wait until the Automatic Updates
UI indicates that the install was finished.

Hi

For those of us currently using GPO to deploy service packs, will then be
some kind of document from Microsoft outlining what:
a) the preferred method of deployment is now
b) how the SUS SP deployment works with the GPO deployment (eg, suppose I
approve the SP in SUS, but the SP has already been installed via GPO - will
it installed again? or does the detection mechanism work out that the SP has
already been installed? What about visa-versa?)

If the SP4 is already installed on a client, like with any other patch the
detection logic will find the service pack already installed and the service
pack will not be offered again. It doesnt matter if you had installed SP4
manually or through GPO or by any other means.
