I have just heard that Josh Kirby, who did all the DW covers (well, all
the paperback and all but one of the hardcovers) has died in his sleep,
aged 72

I'm going to have a drink.

Oh, my.

My sincerest condolences to his family and friends (and you too, Terry).

His unique style was just marvellous, and his work remains - for me -
the definitive vision of the Discworld and its characters (plus all the rest).

I don't drink, but as an artist, I think I'll make an exception here.

Here's cheers to you, Mr Kirby.

R.I.P.

Many condolences and so on to Josh's family, friends and others
associated with him. He was a talented artist, and brought many
readers to the Discworld books, as well as turning his talents to
numerous other projects.
I'm sure his style and wit will be missed by those who only knew his
works, and him as a person missed by those who knew him personally.
Perhaps a look through his compilation of works[1] would be a fitting
rememberance.

I have only just started reading Cosmic Cornucopia, I never realised just
how much fantastic artwork the man was responsible for.

A sad day. :(

I'm always unsure of what to say when someone who's work I admired
so much passes on. Firstly, my sympathies and respects to all his family
and friends.

I don't know about anyone else, but I could sit for *ages* just looking at
all the details in his covers. I ordered a copy of Thief Of Time today and
it's going to be strange thinking it's the last one to be graced with his
artwork.

That hurts, and I didn't even know him. My condolences to those who did.

I'd admired Josh Kirby's work for years before having the opportunity to
meet him at the Discworld con. I signed up for his koffee klatch, and
was glad to have done so. It was a joy to be able to discuss his work
with him, and he struck me as a lovely man. I'm glad I had the chance to
tell him how much pleasure his work had given me.

talented. I have bought books because of his covers. His style was unique,
he will be sorely missed.

Well, I am too. I make a homebrew stout/porter called Black Armband
(which I brewed first when they knocked down the local football
ground). I think I'll have a Black Armband for Josh.
You can always spot a Kirby cover from miles away. Very distinctive.

original.

Ditto.

It was Josh Kirby's cover artwork (for the hardback of Small Gods,
which I still think is one of his finest pieces of work) which first
got me started reading Pratchett almost exactly 10 years ago, and I've
never looked back since.

Sadly missed.

I'm sorry and sad. And will raise the glass as well.

I was actually under the impression that he was much younger
than 72 years old. I mentally placed him somewhere between 30
and 40 years old. Too early nevertheless.

Now, in the future, when my visitors are gazing at the long line of
Discworld paperbacks on my shelves, maybe they will spot the first
back of the novel that has a different cover, and hopefully they will
ask a reason for this, and I can tell them that Josh Kirby, a great
artist, who so far had drawn those covers, had died. This probably
will bring the mood down a bit, but that is usually the price worth
paying, when remembering those that are dead.

My deepest sympathies to Mr. Kirby's family. I, of course, include all
of us in hiis AFPfamily who have long admired his works. Although I
never had the privilege of meeting him face to face, it was his genius
as an artist that first attracted me. His gentleness showed through in

Well, instead of intruding into this thread with stupid remarks like
that, you could actually check the email addy and see whether any
other posts have been made from Terry Pratchett at that address.
Or if you can't do that, and you're genuinely suspicious, you could
wait to see the responses of regular posters, who have seen posts
from Terry before (yes, Terry Pratchett *does* post here - though I
sometimes wonder why, when this is the sort of response he gets).
What you shouldn't do is post this sort of crass nonsense, which
is about as appropriate to this thread as a red nose at a funeral.

Deepest sympathies from my family to the family and friends of Josh Kirby
and anyone who was lucky enough to have met this great artist in person.

To me the pictures on the front of the Discworld books were nearly as
important as the words inside. That first glimpse of a new book, which
you could not fail to notice from the cover. Picking it up and admiring
the originality and beauty of the artwork that adorned the cover. Even
the journey home to read the book was a joy because you could spend
time admiring the work and wondering what the book had in store for
you.
I cannot imagine the Discworld books without Josh's wonderful covers.

He will be sorely missed by all.

I've been offline for some time because of computer problems - I finally get
back on the newsgroup and this is the first post I see :-(

Josh was so talented - wherever I was reading - in hospital, in an airport,
by a swimming pool in the sun, people have been attracted by the covers -
each time asking "is that a Discworld book?"

A very sad day.

My thoughts are with Josh's family and friends.

what I'm saying is it's easy for someone to post something like that
and have lots of people believe them, without any evidence - ok, the
message was from apparently Terry himself, but for all you know some
other troll could have spoofed his account. As much as I believe it,
I'd also like to see newspaper evidence, because I've seen this sort
of thing happen before (someone posted to a Red Dwarf newsgroup

After I posted it in the LiveJournal "discworld" community, someone
asked me for the message ID so she could check for herself. (She would
have believed you, she just wasn't sure whether to believe me about
your post.)

I don't like the recent Kirby covers much, and wish someone had retired
him for Paul Kidby years ago. But given a choice between Josh being alive
and Paul Kidby doing the covers, and Josh being dead and Paul Kidby
doing the covers - well, I haven't really been given a choice at all, have I?

Another hourglass emptied to soon

The last time i used that phrase was when Antti Lehtola died, He died when
he was younger than me and Josh has died at just more than twice my present
age. Both points on a bell curve that will include us all eventually. AFP is
a virtual community that i am proud to be a part of even thou i dont even
post/lurk very often of recent times. For those who have joined since march
1999 this link :-

http://www.lspace.org/fandom/afp/timelines/antti.html

shows how members of the group reacted to a loss in the past and i think it
reflects as well on those in the group as it does on Antti.

For Josh i think the best way to remmember him by fans is his art some of
which can be found at :-

http://www.lspace.org/books/book-covers.html

The eye candy that wraps the contents that inspired this group

Not all the covers are his but if you look at the credits you see

Josh Kirby : virtually everything!!

About fourteen years ago I was scanning through the SF/Fantasy section of my
local bookstore when I noticed the cover of one. Josh Kirby, I was familiar
with his stuff and liked it. 'Jerome K Jerome meets Lord of the Rings(with a
touch of Peter Pan) the blurb said, which meant bog all to me then and even
less now. But the cover looked cool, knobbly trolls, a seedy inn and what
seemed to be a chest on legs. So I handed over my Ā£1.95. And went back the
next day to get The Light Fantastic( and kept looking from the text to the
cover, thinking, 'did I get it wrong? It's a specs joke isn't it?)
All these years later and I've got a heaving bookshelf full of great books
covered with great art.
Thanks Josh.

The books certainly won't be the same. I may not have liked all of the covers
(although many I did, and a couple I loved), but they /all/ captured
Discworld in picture form as well as Pterry does in words.

They won't be quite the same again.

the world is smaller and duller to the tune of one very witty and
vivid artist

however...anything is a subject to be joked about...the problem with
Lister's comment is not that it was in jest, but that it was in bad
taste

admittedly I can't think of a joke that wouldn't be sick right
now...but I'm sure that should anyone have anything to say that is
both funny and in good taste then, wherever Death has delivered him,
Josh Kirby will laugh at it too

Oh dear...

My deepest condolences to Josh's family, friends and everyone here that
knew him.

I've had several interesting conversations on buses, trains etc. with
strangers who have recognised a Discworld book I've been reading just by
the cover, and I have friends who first picked one up to read (usually
off my bookshelf) because of Josh's artwork. AFAIAA I'm not the only
person here to have experienced this.

Such a talented man with a unique style and a fantastic body of work -
and not just the Discworld covers. I never had the chance to meet him but
I'll sorely miss him and his art.

Thanks for brightening up my bookshelves and my life, Josh, and may you
rest in peace.

The same goes for me. Oft criticised for his portrayal of the Discworld
characters he may have been, but to me his were the defining versions,
which none of the other artists, talented though they are, could match.

It will be strange and sad to see a main sequence Discworld book without

Not exactly a fitting tribute to a very talented artist who made Discworld
fans the world over smile to themselves over very apt portrayals of various
characters. Who can forget Twoflower with four eyes?

Let's not dismiss his work, slightly insulting to Terry's choice of artist,
and Discworld fans admiration.

He's not forgotten whilst we admire his covers...

- yes, you have it in a nutshell: whilst his cover art
was not always a very close match to the descriptions
in terry's stories, they capture the spirit of the
discworld perfectly - and they were, and are, *very*
distinctive; in an era when everyone has been trying
their hardest to make their paperbacks look like every-
one else's successful titles, it was a courageous and
an inspired decision [upon transworld's diane lloyd's
part iiuc], to plump for josh's unashamed bright and
busy - even hectic - paintings, that stand out a mile,
and quite clearly announced that "here is something
different - and _fun_".

>I'll miss him.

- and i lament that i will never now have the chance
to get to know him. whilst i've been aware of his sf
& horror (and latterly fantasy) cover art for decades -
since the early days when his paintings appeared on
four square/nel and corgi paperbacks, initially very
definitely richard powers-inspired, but very quickly
developing his own, distinctively quirkily personal
styles, from the mid & early sixties, through paint-
ings done for mayflower books, and also for panther
(later granada), and on into the seventies with pan
(see his covers for robert silverberg's _Lord Valen-
tine's Castle_ & sequelae), and for his covers for
many arrow books' pbs of ted tubb's "Dumarest" series...

lost my place in my thoughts (again)... i didn't meet
josh kirby, until the first elton murphy-organised
ccde, when he was quite surprised at just how many
people knew of him through his p/b artwork, and was
amazed that i, or anyone else, would ask him to sign
a book for us. we chatted briefly, and i would never
have placed him above the mid-fifties: but he was
quite aware of having lost many memories of his early
career and youth, even then. but then he had to go,
and it wasn't until a year on, that i would meet him
again; the thing that sticks in my mind from then,
is his interest in a weirdness that has fascinated me
for three and a half decades, that he had not previ-
ously heard: the anonymous poem from giles earl's
day, or common book, "Tom o'Bedlam". this year, i
had a printed-out copy with me for him, with added
glosses where i have them; but our paths did not
cross - and now, they never again shall.

>
>My sympathy to all his family and friends.

a kind and a gentle man, with a fun-inclined and
curious outlook upon the world, and upon the weird
and wonderful ways of his fellow inhabitants.

I never said his early covers were bad, just the more recent ones, and
I said as much to Josh Kirby himself at DWCon 98. For those covers to
suddenly gain more merit in my eyes when he passed away - now that
*would* be unfitting.

That was exactly my approach to a new book. Study the cover, read the
blurb and try to think up the storyline. For a few days, the book would
just lie there, waiting, my anticipation building and my frustration with
not having time to read it growing..
Then finally the day that I have time to start reading. Once in a while I
I'd close the book again and check the cover. After finishing the book I'd
examined the cover once more to see how wrong or right I was in my
assumptions. And now, if I wonder what a specific book was about, I only
have to look at the cover to relive the contents. And the row of books
looked so bright, cheery and attractive in the bookcase. They are now in a
box in my parents' attic but I promise they will get a place of honor as
soon as we return.

That is a very sad thing to read here. Every time I saw his
illustrations on the cover of a new book I was amazed at
how he could catch the spirit of a discworld novel inside
his paintings. As soon as you saw it you knew that this
wasn't just any ordinary fantasy novel. A very rare talent.

Josh will be missed by everyone.

Considering this started as a thread of condolences regarding the late Josh
Kirby, your comments are insensitive. If you can't say anything nice then
don't bother to post.

The members of the Committee are all saddened by the passing of Josh.
We were holding a meeting this weekend and those of us who had met him
took time to recall the memories he helped make. Our deepest
condolences go to his long time partner, Jackie Rigden, all his family
and friends.

He was a most welcome guest at both the 1996 and 1998 Conventions and
will be missed in 2002.

We will be giving some consideration to the best way of celebrating
his work when the time is right. For now, I just want to remember a
really nice man who was always willing to help and never had an unkind
word to say about even the most unrealistic ideas :-)

We will miss you Josh. Rest well.

Having only just gotten the news I would like to belatedly extend my
condolences to all who held him dear. My favourite part of finishing a DW book
was searching out all the references in the cover art, even after 2nd and 3rd
readings I would find more and more allusions that I had overlooked. He will
certainly be missed.

Hear! Hear! I am going to have one now too, and I think I will have one
whenever I finish a DW book that is not graced by his handiwork, in lieu of
perusing his artwork on the cover.

If I'd said nothing, you'd just have said, "I note *you* didn't post
condolences when Josh Kirby passed away" in a later thread
anyway. May as well get the slagging out of the way now; it'll
distract you from your grief if nothing else.

> If you can't say anything nice then
> don't bother to post.

Do you actually understand what condolences *are*? Try reading
this thread. Try counting the number of people who didn't talk about
what they had lost or would miss, or how they hurt - then count the
number who did. Condolences are about saying you're sorry for
someone else's loss, not for your own.

I'm not slating all the people who *have* been bemoaning what
Josh's passing has cost them here; it's only natural and reasonable
for them to do so. But I don't see how you can believe for one
second that sorrow based on the magnitude of loss is in any way
nicer or more condoling than that based on the loss of the man
regardless of his perceived merit.

God Jehovah, author of the darkly comic Real World series, said today:
'I am delighted to welcome Mr. Kirby to his eternal reward. I have
always been unstinting in my praise for his richly inventive
imagination. As a Creator, I'm always intrigued and delighted when my
works inspire such affectionate celebration, and I've had my eye on Mr.
Kirby for some time to illustrate the books of my bestselling Holy
Bible, in a celestial-only edition. I know his many mortal fans will be
disappointed that these will be unavailable on Earth, but the project
will, I'm sure, give them something to look forward to in the
afterlife.'
Jehovah's agent added, 'Mr. Kirby will enjoy a brief holiday as a guest
of one of our previous interpreters, Mr. Buonarotti, while we prepare a
studio for him. Needless to say, our energies will be devoted to
ensuring that he is given every facility to produce his best possible
work, and we intend to demonstrate to him that his wealth was truly
stored up in Heaven.'
WIC (work in comfort), Josh.

May I add to Carrie's remark by sending my sympathies to Josh Kirby's
family.
I was privileged to meet a kind and quiet man at the conventions and
ccde and someone who was, I think, a little taken aback with the
spotlight that fell upon him with the success of the Discworld series

As I type this I can look up to "Soul Music" and "Light Fantasic"
posters, now a poignant memorial to a talented artist whose skills,
of course, spread far beyond the covers of Terry's work, and I will
treasure even moire my copy of "In the Garden of Unearthly Delights"

was raised in memory of Josh Kirby

It's for real.

Just a little sensitivity training, (for anyone that needs it)
don't post: "I don't believe you're really "X" " type articles

If you're not sure, just sit back and wait a little, someone
who knows will point it out if it's not for real.

To all who complained: I did say I only *think*.

And Lister's "Oh, I was just scoring points off Pterry's Josh
Kirby obit" comment was *not*? I don't think anything I said
in this thread - or this group, this communications medium, or
this plane of existence for that matter - compares in lack of
sensitivity to following up someone's condolences with a
smiley and an attempt to seem clever. The vileness of such
behaviour doesn't alter just because it was me who pointed it
out.

I believe that is where the problem arises... you quite patently didn't
think :-(

No you are not speaking for us all. I for one would not talk to
someone
in that manner no matter what the provocation

Who died and made you afp spokesperson?

This is beside the point.

Had some third party posted an insensitive response, Lister's comment
would still have been in bad taste. Similarly, Lister's comment is in no
manner an excuse for yours.

I'd need more research before I could agree or disagree with that.

No, but wouldn't it have been nice if it were the only vileness in this
thread? Containment, so to speak?

My condolences to all who knew Josh Kirby as a mate. The world is less one
great fella, and artist.

You don't speak for me. Please re-"think" your phrasing.

I never knew him personally, but as a design student I bow to the
passing of a master.

For me, seeing the cover gave me the first impression on the story,
the characters and the world, and this impression would persist
throughout the book. Whatever other visions the stories would inspire,
they always sprang from the 'seed' of the cover art, or at the very
least, were tinted by it. So, not only did Kirby's covers capture the
spirit but, in a subtle, spice-like way, they participated in actually
creating my impression of Discworld.

Ah, well. That's how the world works. Isn't there a saying to the
effect that as long as people are remembered they are not really gone?
Josh Kirby will be around for quite a while; every time I look at one
of his covers, he is there.

I could copy-and-paste this into a post of my own, or I could just
say "What Meg just says applies to me also, which is not to mean
that anything she says in future will do so". On second thoughts:

Let me make this clear:
