k...... checked off thebox for the "disable system restore" rebooted,
unchecked the box and rebooted again.... didnt work
next.... ran a search for a wininit.ini file on my system...... none found

searched for tgcmd.exe. none found
searched for "ACCESS DENIED" .... none found
read Q274092 - "Error Message: System Restore Cannot Run Until You Restart
the
Computer" (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q274/0/92.ASP).
then I ran SCANREG /FIX
I rebooted and when I opened system restore, there were no new checkpoints,
but it allowed me to create one manually.
I will continue for a while to see if any checkpoints are automatically
created. I will also keep your post flagged so I can return if I have more
problems. Thank you for your time :) I really appreciate it.

My system last restored on friday 13 sept ( I noticed
someone else has posted the same date)I do not use Zone
Alarm.
The error message I get when attempting a manual point
is 'System restore is not able to create a restore point.
Please restart the computer and then use System Restore
again'
This of course makes no differnce whatsoever.
I have loads of disc space and plenty of memory.

AHAh!!
That's the kicker - you have a wininit.ini file (or at least, windows thinks
you do)!!
Reboot the PC.
You _should_ get the Windows is Updating your System Configuration message
Look for the file in your windows folder - it may be hidden - and rename it
to wininit.jnk if you find it.
try System restore again - does it work now?
If the answer to any/all of the above is 'No'
then try this

Start|Run
type
SCANREG /FIX (note the space)
and hit Enter
Windows will reboot

Now try SR again - does it work?

Here is my latest report re: this issue:

My WinME box last created an auto SR point at 4:31 PM on 9/24/2002, by
disabling the free ZA 3.1.395 and eTrust AV 6.0.123.
Rebooting to run the normal startup group, including the two utilities
above, has resulted in NO NEW SR CHECKPOINTS since then, some thirteen
days.

In contrast, a XP Home box running the same utilities creates auto SR
checkpoints every 24 hours.

I also continue to find the DUN dialer is initiated by ZA very early in
the startup process, even as early as the scandisk run following an
improper shutdown. The dialer runs prior to Windows logon. This is
consistent with ZA started as a HKLM\...\"RunService".

I also find that if the eTrust V.6 process, Inotask, is disabled using
msconfig, then one cannot retrieve new signature files.
It apparently is not just a "task scheduler" for the AV, but is
necessary for the signature DL process.
And only the eTrust "realmon" process appears in Task Manager; the
Inort9x and Inotask processes are not reported there.

For WinME systems with ZA where restore points do not occur, could you
tell me whether manual restore points have been found to work? Also,
do restore points work that were formed by turning ZA off for a few
minutes? Thanks for any information you can offer.

Good question.......I was looking back at SR to see what all happened.
I did a System Restore AFTER I had removed the offending ZA version
and reverted to the 2.6.231 freebie version.......and it worked OK.
But it was after doing the above.......not during.

Has anyone restored back to a manual restore point?

I am prepared now to test these questions, but have not done so yet
while testing the auto checkpoint possibility over the past thirteen
days.
Perhaps some other user can usefully comment.

I have a Dell Dimension L700cx with Windows Me and free ZA 3.1.291. My
system has not made automatic restore points since ZA was upgraded to
3.1.291. I am able to make manual restore points. Also, an automatic
restore point is generated when I turn ZA off for a few minutes.

This morning I tested both a manual and an automatic restore point.
Both System Restore operations were successful. The test consisted of
uninstalling the Google Toolbar and then performing a System Restore.
In both cases. the Google Toolbar reappeared after the System Restore.
Does this seem to be an adequate test? (The automatic restore point
was a few minutes old. The manual restore point was two days old.)

I realize this test only applies to my system and does not answer any
general issues about SR. But I sure feel better.

In the past, it was almost always necessary to reload NAV 2001 after
an SR. A reload was not required today for either test. Could that be
explained by the restore points being very recent, so nothing in NAV
changed?

The reload of NAV is only required when you restore back through the last
time that you updated the virus definitions for NAV - so I'd be surprised if
a 'short' restore such as that was to cause a problem.
