I finally fixed the loading bug (at least on my test machines), and UT X
Preview 2 is up on MacGameFiles (www.macgamefiles.com). This version
also contains a fix to make modifier keys (control/shift/etc) work
correctly. If this works better for everyone, then I can get on to
fixing bugs further into the game.

For the curious, the loading bug turned out to be a code generation bug
in CodeWarrior. In one last ditch attempt to track it down, I
methodically ran through all the differences between UT X and Harry
Potter X (which works fine), double checked all the compiler switches,
and finally got UT to start working (this is about the third time I've
done this, I must have tripped something new in this pass). No wonder
all the debugging I did of the UT code for months didn't help, it wasn't
actually a bug in the UT code or in OS X :(

Sweet! Thanks, Glenda.
There's one thing that has bugged me for a long time with OpenGL UT in
OS 9. I've just recently narrowed down the problem and I'm pretty sure
it's an issue with the ATI OpenGL drivers for OS 9.
When running UT OpenGL cityintro timedemos in OS 9 and X, on a G4 867 w/
the original retail Radeon, I get the following fps averages (640x480)

UT Classic w/ SBL 51.75
UT Classic builtin sound 54.5
UT OS X 52.5

While the average is about the same the final number is very deceiving.
In the timedemos, inside the Liandri building, where the two contestants
come out of the floor, w/ an ATI (Radeon and 128 Pro) card, the frame
rates plummet to an average of about 10 fps while in that room, with and
without volumetric lighting. I don't know what exactly is going on in
that room, but it only happens in OS 9 w/ ATI cards. OS 9 with NVIDIA
cards play that part of the cityintro just fine. OS X with my Radeon
plays that scene just fine. In OS 9, if the Radeon didn't drop so much,
the average timedemo would probably be on par, or better, than the RAVE
scores. It has to be an issue with the ATI OpenGL drivers. For along
time, I thought it was a UT OpenGL issue until recently when I finally
bothered to run some timedemos on my G4 400 with my G4 867s ol GF2MX.

Has anyone else noticed this? Glenda, if you have noticed this, have
you ever contacted ATI about it? I was thinking of maybe emailing Chris
Bentley and you about it, but I've been too busy to remember.

Thanks Glenda, this is the first version of OS X that works for me :)

Downloaded and installed into a copy of my UT folder (meaning it contains
everything OS 9 UT has minus the OT stuff). It start ok although the voice
in the intro movie is horribly cratchy, the menus work and so on - but
when I try to start a botmatch, the game quits and I'm told that it can't
find "de".

Huh?

I'm using a 867 G4 with OS 10.1.2.

This seems to affect only bots. I had no problems joining an online game.
But a botmatch? "Can't find De" or some such thing. I have few other
minor quibbles (menu mouse, slash through menubar) as well, but I'll send
those to that email address in the readme that came with the preview.

Oh god...now we have to download Bonus Pack #2 (the Digital Extremes
CrapPack).

You have to download Bonus Pack #2

Look for it at download.com or unrealtournament.com under downloads

What is the status of music in UT X? I noticed the Read Me says it may not
ever be supported, could you maybe explain why? I am not a programmer but
can't you "just" replace the ZSS-code to operate against MikMod instead or
are there some deeper complications in the background?

<http://www.fruitz-of-dojo.de/php/download.php4?dlnr=5>

Also there are two minor bugs (perhaps better labeled limitations) which
I've noticed in the original 436 release but never got around to reporting
yet. The first is that you can only send 255 characters through the
command-line startup interface, annoying when you want to launch a dedicated
server with more than just a few settings (a longish list of mutators for
example) on a machine where you don't want to add the overhead of even
loading the GUI temporarily (such as my old 7600 serving UT).

The second is that the built-in web-administration is practically worhless
because the engine adds a line-break before and after every value it inserts
into the template HTML-files. Consider this example:

<INPUT VALUE="#default_inserted_by_server#">

When parsed by the server, the above would be outputted as:

<INPUT VALUE="
The Value To Be Inserted
">

Obviously this causes problems for most web-browsers when trying to parse
the HTML. Do you think the two above issues could perhaps be easily fixed?
It would ease the pain of administering dedicated servers a whole lot.

The UMOD installer also seems to have problems sometimes when converting
paths into Mac-style formatting, sometimes resulting in files with slashes
in their name instead of being sent to the appropriate folder. Maybe
something to look into if you ever get around to carbonizing the UMOD tool?

And now for something totally unrelated to Unreal: Would it be possible on
the project status page to add which programmers are working on a project?
No big deal but it'd make guessing code-names even more interesting when you
know what kind of games a certain programmer likes to take on ;)

And just out of curiosity, who are doing DX PS2? I'd imagine Ken Cob and/or
Phil Sulak since I've not seen anything about them in quite a while...?

Whoops, looks like this one turned out rather long. Anyways, thanks for all
your hard work and for keeping us updated! =)

I think I have this thing, but I only installed the maps. I skipped the
Umod thing because it gave me a "De" that wouldn't let me play *any*
online games.

Thanks LOADS for getting this going, I finally can run UT again!
I've been playing Urban Terror on Quake III as a way to make up for it,
and I forgot how AWESOME Unreal looks...:)

Anyways, the biggest problem I'm having is mouse movement. It moves
ok in place, but if I'm running and turning, I'm getting a definate
"stick" in motion. Tied moving my movement keys, and it had no effect.

Again, thanks for the great work!

It's possible, once UT X is working pretty well DX is next highest on my

I've used it a bunch. Even served a few Co-op games on Game Ranger. A
little tricky since people have to try and connect more than once to
play on the server, but it worked.

When I install the game I use these steps.

1. Install Unreal and Unreal Tournament (duh), latest versions for both.

2. Drag the Unreal folder inside the Unreal Tournament folder.

3. Download the OldSkool mod. I get the full version (13 MB) but I only
really need the .umod file.

4. Drag and drop the .umod file onto UMOD Installer (which should be in
the same folder as Unreal Tournament) so the necessary files are
installed.

5. Open up your UnrealTournament.ini file and add the following lines
to [Core.System]:

Paths=:Unreal:System:*.u
Paths=:Unreal:Maps:*.unr
Paths=:Unreal:Textures:*.utx
Paths=:Unreal:Sounds:*.uax
Paths=:Unreal:Music:*.umx

6. Start up UT and mess around with the Old Skool settings. You can
start a coop server by starting a new Single Player game.

Anyone have a place to get the oldskool umod? the above link seems to
have the patches only (and you can't even load it with IE 5.1 os x!)

I was able to download it just fine. The full oldskool umod is only 13
MBs. Are you expecting to be able to download the entire Unreal game?
That'd be illegal. Unfortunately, Unreal is pretty hard to find these

No I have 3 copies thank you very much ;)

The problem was the javascript menus he has. The menu won't plot at
all under IE 5.1 OS X, just the snide remark to get a browers that
really supports Java. If I use Omniweb, the name 'filez' among others
appears but they don't do anything when clicked. Your link took me to
