Hi, I'm looking at a used 93 Audi 90S auto V6 w/ 99,000 miles. The seller
is asking for $4000. However, the car has not pass emission tests 4 times
in the past, also the air conditioning is not working (blows hot air).
Otherwise, the car is in very good shape. I'd like to get Audi owners'
opinion with regard to this matter. BTW, I'm a college student, so $$$ is a
problem when it comes to repairs and services. Thank you very much.

Contrary to the other two posts, my Audi owner's experience has been
very rewarding. My 4000CSq and 80q have both been top-notch,
dead-reliable and cheap to own. Other than regular replaceables like
brakes, plugs, bulbs, tires, etc, the cars have had no problems at
all. But there is a catch - both cars had full service histories, and
were driven mostly on the highway. Not only that, but they are
probably over-maintained! :) I would buy another used Audi in a
second, IF:

- it had a full service history,

- it looked like it was in the proper condition for a car of it's
miles,

- the owner would let me do a pre-inspection at a shop of my choice.

Otherwise, no deal. But you already are staring at a $500-900 A/C
repair (just a guess that it's NOT just in need of a recharge,) and
Audi parts and service can become expensive if you have something big
to do. That same money might be better spent on a used Toyota if you
are looking for reliable, or even a VW if you are looking for cheap
parts and can turn a wrench yourself. An A2 GTI or GLI might be more
in your budget. This particular car sounds like a bad deal - if the
previous owner didn't want to fix the A/C, what ELSE did they not want
to fix???

Good luck,

I have a 93 100cs. Although fun to drive, be prepared to pay more for
maintenance, buy premium gas, constantly feed it oil and to fix the
numerous things that break. On my 100cs, the rear pass window won't go
up (see my post on this group), couple of lights have gone out on the
dash gauges, a sun roof that likes to open on its own, the sunroof
console hinges breaking off and dropping down, doors that would
unlock when you tried to lock them and interior plastic pieces
falling off. I've heard that the transmission is known for going too
and mine doesn't feel too good.
